Overview
The Westminster Confession is a foundational document for countless churches worldwide. Churches of all sizes claim it as their confession, and hold to it with varying degrees of closeness. Its influence must not be underestimated. However, countless officeholders will have vowed to abide by the Westminster Confession with only the most perfunctory of understanding of its relevance to their situation. Ligon Duncan has assembled an impressive array of contributors from a variety of ecclesiastical backgrounds. The aim is simple - to enable the 21st Century to understand the confession more fully, and so bring about the same kind of rugged, vigorous, intelligent and self-sacrificing Christianity that was the result of its initial publication over 350 years ago. In the first of what will be three volumes, the topics covered include: Baptists and the Westminster Confession Finney's attack on the Westminster Confession The Westminster Confession and the Relationship of Church and State The Holy Spirit and the Westminster Confession

Let Us Hold Fast To The Confession Of Our Faith  Jul 4, 2008
It occurred to me that the seminal thoughts of the Westminster Divines have a progeny of note. Dating from the 1600's, this is the basis of the Reformed Faith. That they are referred to as the Westminster divines, aptly describes their contribution to the church.

One contributor to this awe-inspiring first volume, Michael S Horton, embarks on an illuminating essay of warning dating from the 1800's. After this derisory study of history, one is able to see the dear cost Finney paid to his faith. The extraordinary lengths he went to, to uproot the Westminster Confession and its achievement in the new America, was met with devastating success at the poll - much to the glee of adulatory crowds and thrill-seeking fairgoers.

'In a recent interview, Jerry Falwell claimed Finney as 'one of my greatest heroes'. pg 411 And so he has become to many, including Graham. But when were their interests not defined by the following?

'Evangelistic practices, seeker-sensitive approaches, church growth strategies that emphasize technique (over biblical truth), political activism on the part of the church, nationalism, moralism, and a host of other interests are directly descended from the anthropocentric theology at the heart of Finney's rejection of the Westminster Standards.' pg 412

The 'anxious bench', alter calls, the on-stage public rebuke of those in opposition, the henchmen sent in advance as a circus entering towns, the repeated boast of 'No Creed, but Christ' - all were tactics spuriously employed to magnify the ministry of Finney. Today's revivals have fostered affinity to pragmatism, and are blinded by the historical facts on Finney's departure from the truth.

Of the divines John Murray truthfully extolled: 'Language fails to assess the blessing that God in His sovereign providence and grace bestowed upon His church through these...The influence exerted by them is beyond all human calculation. We should indeed be remiss if we did not make this commemoration the occasion for grateful remembrance of God's inestimable favor. Other men labored and we have entered into their labors. Truly the lines have fallen unto us in pleasant places and we have a goodly heritage.' pg 38
