Item Description...
My husband and I eagerly accepted positions as private tutors for a visionary princess in Saudi Arabia. She dreamed of providing the best education possible for her children and secretly opened a private school. We championed her dreams as if they were our own. However, a year later, we encountered a medieval system of palace intrigue and subterfuge. Under threat of imprisonment, we were detained and coerced into signing false statements. Would God's deliverance come in time or would we be forgotten and imprisoned in a foreign land? Journey with us to the center of the human heart and to the mysterious Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where the shifting sands are full of dreams, intrigue and revenge.

An incredible view of a woman brave enough to go into the unknown by faith.   Oct 29, 2008
Ms. Decker's eloquent expression of her personal experience in a new country is both informative and heart warming. She remained true to her convictions and described her experience thoroughly and intimately.

I applaud Ms. Decker for the depth of her faith and belief that God would carry her through every new trial and protect her in an unknown world so different from her own. She was willing to live as a woman under strict restraints while learning the culture and beliefs in a small amount of time.

I highly recommend this book to teachers, Christians, and people interested in a modern day Paul who knows that sometimes to save people you first need to walk in their shoes.

An Informative Quick Read  Oct 24, 2008
I loved this book. I taught with the author years ago, and I was engrossed as she transported me to Saudi Arabia to a culture that was foreign and mysterious. Motivated by her Christian values and her love for her students, she caused me to feel her frustration at someone arbitrarily undermining her and her husband's efforts to provide a rich educational experience for them.
Couldn't put it down!  Oct 6, 2008
A friend gave me this book, and I absolutely could hardly put it down. When I wasn't reading, I was thinking about it. I am a 5th grade teacher, and last year I read certain "G" rated parts to my students, who sat open mouthed and dumbfounded as they discovered how very, very different American culture is from Saudi culture. Teachers like Mrs. Decker should be showcased on all of the talk shows because these teachers are the people who are truly providing straight talk to Americans. After reading her book, it was no longer a mystery as to why most of the 911 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia. Too bad Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney, and George Bush didn't read it before they took office. The one negative review of this book seems to come from either a typical Muslim zealot, or someone with a personal agenda against the author. If you want an insider's view as to the profound hypocrisy of well to do and royal Saudi's, and the culture that treats women as property, read this book. You'll be hooked by page 3.
If you are interested in an objective view of Saudi Life SKIP THIS BOOK  Sep 23, 2008
Krisin should have spent more time interacting with Saudi women to find out what their views were about their lives and less time pontificating about her religous beliefs. That would have made this book intesting and informative to the reader.

I knew she'd have problems when she told the recruiter (Abdullah) that she had no problem wearing an abaya (a long cloak) and head scarf, then in the next chapter which describes her FIRST day in Saudi Arabia, she complains "...Does it have to black?" She didn't know that before she got on the plane? And at the end of a trip to the mall the same day she complains "...I'd had enough exposure to a lifestyle that destroyed the dignity of women...". WOW all this insight on day one.

I was also surprised when she stated that she didn't know much about Ramadan, which she described as the most important religious event in Islam. REALLY Kristin? Wouldn't it have been a better idea to spend less time reading your bible and more time researching the country, culture and the religion of Saudi Arabia before going to teach there?

I would not recommend this book to anyone.

A lot learned in a little time  May 17, 2007
This book is an easy read...with a lot of insights into the Moslem culture..that's not radical, but with a different way of thinking. Ms. Decker is a good writer too. And if you are thinking of working or visiting an Arab country, this would be a good book to read!
