Stories on living well and dying well from an undertaker'' wife. A celebration of life through the lens of a small town funeral home and a woman'' journey of faith. Written in a James Herriott/All Things Bright and Beautiful style makes The Undertaker's Wife both engaging and readable just for its pure story. There are few authors with Celia Hastings' credentials which include both the first hand knowledge of running of a funeral home and an advanced theological degree. Unexpected dissapointment!  Aug 17, 2008
I did not realize that this book is a Bible study. The author writes in an immature style that sounds more like a high school student writer than a grown woman with a degree from seminary. I was bored and had to force myself through it. the questions at the end of each chapter were infantile and simplistic. the only people I would recommend this book to would be youth who were wanting to learn and understand about death. This might be a good book for a youth group to take on as a reading group discussion book.

Invaluable resource  Aug 29, 2006
The Undertaker's Wife is a great source book in considering the how-tos of funerals as well as the emotional work that can be done to help prepare love ones for this most difficult time. Hastings approaches this subject with sensitivity and compassion, yet she does not sugar coat the difficult choices that should be made.

For those either facing death or facing the death of a loved one, this is a very valuable, easily readable book that I recommend highly.

My Walk With Hastings  Oct 11, 2005
"The Undertaker's Wife" is kind of a "How To" about funerals, but it's mixed with the intelligent and sensitive author's view on life. (And death.) The first surprise was-- Hastings' stories contain humor--something you don't expect in a funeral instruction book. (How many funny undertakers do you know?) That's one thing that makes the book wonderful--it's full of the unexpected. But it's never irreverent, either. Hastings talks straight from the heart, which is the only way you can deal with funerals anyway. I first opened up to "Appendix A"...where her flow chart begins with..."Has someone died? -Yes - No." Even though I came upon this book just days after my mother died, I thought-Wow! This writer DEFINITELY has my attention. So this book is more than a "How To" book. It's a look ahead (to a place where most of us go kicking and screaming), but Hastings guides us gently along a path we know we must someday walk. She has a special touch. Her book is sensible, genuine-it's almost like a memoir in that it takes you to personal places you've never before gone to, but really need to visit. My advice: take the trip with Hastings. It's the least expensive, most gently humorous, most intelligent walk you'll take with ANYBODY down that valley. (Plus, you'll learn a lot.)

Inspiring, humorous and informative  Aug 29, 2005
I could not put the book, The Undertaker's Wife down!! I was so fascinated with the small town funeral home life and how Celia Hastings made everything so positive!! She offered some wonderful suggestions and I wish everyone could read this that has to plan a funeral as she has ideas and ways to go about it.........infact everyone should read it. She tells about a life that most of us are not familiar with in this day and age......She has energy and is filled with love and compassion. I highly reccomend this book to everyone!!!

A Treasure To Share  Aug 23, 2005
What a treasure! I have never read a book that had me laughing in one paragraph, crying in the next, and laughing again before I turned the page. Once I picked up this book it was almost impossible to put down. Celia has a way of taking life's little stories and turning them into inspiration from the heart, and wisdom for the soul.
Although the reality of death, grief and loss can feel devastating, Celia points out the joy that is often found when the loss is shared. Death gives us opportunities we might otherwise put off until another time. When my sister died several years ago, my eight year old nephew brought out my sister's photo albums and asked me to go through them with him. Over the next couple of hours we sat side by side as I told him the story behind each photograph. I had forgotten how much my sister and I had shared even when she was just a toddler, and the hours I spent sharing those stories with my nephew is a memory I will long remember with fondness and gratitude.
In addition to the wonderful stories, this book is filled with practical and useful information for everyone. It's a fact that each of us will die, and someone will be left to take care of our remains. Having this information at your fingertips will make the process easier and leave you feeling more self-assured that the decisions you make are the right ones. I would recommend this book for everyone.
