Item Description...
Ministers struggle to find new and captivating angles on the stories that have been told and retold for centuries. The rest of us just struggle to find some meaning amid all the sensationalism that typically surrounds these holy days. The author offers some hope for both the preacher and the listener. Beginning with the season of Advent, Dant guides us to Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter and Pentecost. Added to these prominent holy days are sermons and thoughts for national holidays. The lessons and insights tucked into these pages would be welcomed on any day of your life. The nature of these meditations is rooted in the author's personal background. His faith is even broader, as he was born to a Jewish mother, christened into the Roman Catholic church, adopted as a young student into a Baptist family and educated at a Presbyterian seminary. It is from that rich background that he shares these stories and sermons with us.

Great Sermons make for a Great Book  Jul 29, 2007
A greater joy than reading this book is knowing the author. Having the privilege of hearing him preach makes it even more enjoyable to hear his "voice" while reading. This would make a great gift for anyone any time of the year.
The Truth Is Sensational Enough  Jul 17, 2007
Excellent book that I couldn't put down! Alot of laughs and Jim's love of the Lord shines through on every page. "None of us would survive the law without grace." ABSOLUTELY!! Everyone on my Christmas list will be receiving this fantastic read this year!
A Luminous, Pastoral Heart  Jul 7, 2007
What do you do with old sermons? They aren't exactly day-old bread. They're more like spent uranium rods. If the sermons are any good, you publish them in a collection. Jim Dant's sermons are good. By that I mean they are edifying, insightful and at times even radiant.

Dant has a gift for weaving the insights of the Gospel with daily life. Salted with stories from his years of pastoral experience, these sermons run the emotional continuum from tears to laughter, sorrow and joy. Unlike a collection from Buechner, where the literary craft and skill of a novelist are used to fashion a sermon as a kind of compelling short story, Dant's sermons are fired in the kiln of a congregation. This is not to criticize Buechner since I adore his work. But it is to say there is a significant difference when a sermon has to be delivered on a weekly basis to a congregation. These sermons of Dant's have passed that test.

There are half a dozen hallmarks of excellent sermons against which I would judge any sermon. I put these together not only as a listener but as someone who must also face the weekly deadline of providing a congregation some word from on high. Excellent sermons are: *inspirational, not entertaining, *words that are ignited by the Word, *genuine, *Cruciform, *well-delivered, and *courageous enough to take us to the deep end.

In America where Christianity-as-Entertainment is the prevailing model of church, there are persons who want to be entertained and they will fill auditoriums to receive the Gospel drizzled like sugar on cinnabons. But Jesus was not entertaining. He was often dismissive. He didn't seek to tickle ears as much as flash-fry them. He inspired persons. Inspire is a great word and Jim Dant knows what it means. These sermons are rooted in the Word and hearken back to the Word but they are also genuine, if by this we mean they emerge out of the authentic life-world of the proclaimer. They are cruciform inasmuch as these sermons reveal that the preacher/pastor has his fingers in the wounds of Christ. They bear the mark of our humanity and thus, the marks of Christ Crucified. If the preacher cannot figure out that I enter the sanctuary wounded then there will be no figuring out of anything. Dant knows this. The Truth Is Sensational Enough is a well-delivered collection that crafts its insights upon the foundation of the liturgical year. If Jim Dant is preaching like this most Sundays, then most Sundays his congregation is blessed with a very, very fine gift. I know because I've listened to awful preaching for years growing up and it is downright painful. Unlike the butt-backward proclamations of prosperity-toon televangelists who sell Jesus like they're selling soap, Jim Dant delivers well-crafted sermons that are a joy to read. They contain soda bottles, bait, trucks, potluck suppers, hospital corridors and subway stations populated with very interesting characters who range in age from toddlers to old matriarchs. When you stand back from these sermons, as you would after putting the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together, you will see your life mirrored there. Appropriate gasps of "wow" and "I see" will fizz through these texts as you read them.

At the end of the day, a sermon or collection of sermons should get us to the deep end where we can plummet the depths of God and life. This collection gets us there. It does so not through a brilliant philosophical analysis or academic erudition; not by a literary or poetic hand; but it does so by a luminous, pastoral heart that throbs at the center of this collection. If I were to end up somehow in Macon I can tell you this: I would find a pew and listen to this preacher and pastor. He has something to say and a delightful way of saying it.
