Lieutenant Grant Smith and Lydia Reynolds are in love and engaged to marry. Their plans crumble, however, when Grant is sent with U.S. forces to the Mexican-American War and is reported killed. Devastated, Lydia sadly begins a new life and marries; Grant, who has miraculously survived and escaped from a prison camp, returns home only to find Lydia gone. Years later, Grant's daughter, Jessica, accepts a marriage proposal by mail from a young pastor living out West. Through Jessica, Lydia and Grant rediscover each other - and find out if they can rekindle the spark of love born almost a lifetime ago.

Publishers Description
Grant Smith and Lydia Reynolds fell in love at a young age and their "tender flame" continued to burn. As Grant approached graduation from West Point he asked Lydia to marry him. Wedding preparations were underway when President Polk suddenly announced that war with Mexico was inevitable -- duty called and Grant was sent to Mexico. Lydia was grief stricken when she was told that Grant was wounded in battle and believed dead. After 2 years Grant escapes from a Mexican prison and returns home. He finds that Lydia has remarried and is now living in the Northwest. Many years pass until they meet again, both now widowed and realize that the "tender flame" has never gone out. Grant and Lydia come to realize that "As for God, His way is perfect."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
the tender flame  Aug 4, 2005
wonderful, many verses from the bible that helped not only the characters in the book but me, beautifully written
Way Too Fictional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Nov 16, 2002
I borrowed this book from a friend, (boy am I glad this book isn't mine). It was too fictional. The characters are too perfect. We're all human, and we've all messed up at least once in our lifetime, so it's pretty hard to read a book about 'perfect' people.
This book had a fantasy family. The children rarely fought. The parents never gave each other one of those 'looks'. They had the 'always' reliable friends, the type of friends you could only dream about. They never messed up. They never made a mistake. They never seemed to doubt God. You didn't really get to know the characters. So you really coudn't feel sorry for them. The characters were flat. They were boring.
The authors tried to put surprises in, but the book would always lead right back to the original path. Their detours in this book (to try to make it more interesting) just prolonged the book, and made it boring.
I must admit, that when I had read just the first couple pages of this book I was excited. Unfortunely the rest of the book wasn't all that I had expected.
This book had a great story line (that's why it got two stars) but it was poorly written. If you really want to read this book, my advice would be to either borrow from a friend, or borrow from a library. After that, if you really like it, I guess buy it. I personally wouldn't buy this book, But hey, last time I checked this was still a free country.
Give it a try.....  Apr 8, 2000
I enjoyed the book, I'll admit its a little slow at times but all in all it was a good book.
highly unlikely to really happen  Nov 30, 1999
What are the chances of having conections with the same people in the way that they do? This was an interesting book in some parts, but the use of "coincedenses" was quite sappy, I thought.

Another big turn off for me is that the picture on the front was rather sappy. Maybe it's just me--it just didn't set right. It was kind of boring-looking and made them look like a boring couple.
