Overview
If you are thinking about homeschooling, or are struggling with a homeschooling curriculum that is difficult to use, let Dr. Ray and Dorothy Moore show you how to make homeschooling an easy-to-live-with family adventure in learning. Known as the grandparents of homeschooling, the Moores have helped thousands of parents successfully homeschool their children -- comfortably and effectively. This low--stress, low--cost program shows you how to build a curriculum around your child's needs and interests -- and around a realistic family schedule. Instead of a cut--and-dried approach, you'll discover the freedom of a flexible program that encourages creativity and initiative. You'll be able to give your children a better grasp of the basics while giving them a richer and more independent view of the world. With a realistic look at the problems homeschooling parents face, this comprehensive handbook offers practical strategies that help you * Choose a curriculum that really works for you and your children * Avoid student resentment and parent burnout * Target your child's interest and motivation to make learning fun * Help your child excel in educational goals, including standardized tests * Understand how a child's developmental stages contribute to learning * See the big picture of family and society in the learning process This creative approach to homeschooling puts the family first, without sacrificing educational quality. Based on extensive research and use, The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook offers a creative alternative to the regular classroom approach.

Dorothy Moore's dynamic teaching ministry has touched countless lives at home and abroad; ministering across Texas as a representative of Woman's Aglow, and presenting seminars to women in Singapore, India, Romania, Indonesia, Mexico, Estonia and Ethiopia. Dorothy's ministry reflects the heart of God to see His children walk in complete spiritual, emotional and physical healing (teaching on subjects as varied as street ministry, breaking generational curses and deliverance); and is marked by a strong emphasis on reconciliation between people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures. A former radio talk show host, social worker in a trauma unit, "700 Club" counselor and ordained minister, Dorothy holds a B.S. degree in Christian Counseling and has pursued graduate studies with Kings Seminary under Pastor Jack Hayford. In 1987, Dorothy founded Reconciliation Outreach, an inner city life rehabilitation program providing a safe haven and Christian discipleship for homeless and needy men, women and children in East Dallas. She was also founding pastor of Reconciliation Church. Dorothy received the Unsung Heroines Award from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison during a ceremony at the Nation's Capitol (1999) and The God's Leading Ladies Legacy Award from Serita Jakes and The Potter's House (2005). She has also appeared as a guest on TBN, several local television and radio programs, and been featured in numerous publications and a feature article in Charisma Magazine. Dorothy is also listed in the Heritage Registry of Who's Who. Dorothy and her husband, Bob, reside in Denton, Texas, and are the parents of four adult children.

Dorothy Moore currently resides in Sullivan's Island Da.

Bridges the gap between homeschooling and unschooling!  Jan 12, 2007
I love this book so much!!! I refer to it quite often and use alot of the ideas in it. When I first started homeschooling my son everyone made me feel like I was doing something wrong. But It was the best decision I think I ever made. And the Moores really validate the many feelings homeschool parents have.

A Wonderful Book!!  Apr 7, 2005
This is the very first book I read after I first had thoughts of homeschooling our children. I fell in love with the Moore's! They seem like the sweetest older couple you would ever want to meet. They show you their method (which as many reviewers have already pointed out is no formal education until 10-12 years of age) and tell you how to do it. I came away from reading this book encouraged, and I ordered all the rest of their books, too! They have written several; another very good one is "Home Grown Kids". I'm not sure if it's in print anymore - I bought it used. Other people have said they don't agree with some of the methods (such as waiting)and I must admit that it is hard to do. Today's society makes it almost impossible to permit your child to not be able to read when he/she is 10-11!! The thing is, though, Dorothy Moore was a successful remedial reading teacher - she knows what she is talking about when it comes to teaching reading! Two things they mention must go hand in hand with homeschooling is service to others and manual labor. They believe it is healthy for a child to have work with his heart and hands as well as his mind. I love that idea - too many adults (let alone children) only think of themselves. This book (and others they've authored) mentions different ways to make these two things happen.
In conclusion, there are some things in this book that I would love to follow through on, but as I stated earlier, are almost impossible to do because of societal constraints, such as waiting until between 10-12 to start formal schooling. I do plan on incorporating many of their ideas into my homeschool. Some reviewers have called the authors "arrogant". I would not say that - I felt like they were giving "grandmotherly" advice I could choose to use or not.

borrow it if you can  Mar 11, 2004
This book will help you to relax about homeschooling if you're stressing about it, but other than that, i was pretty dissapointed.

If i could do it again, I'd try to borrow it from someone rather than spending money on it. In fact, I'm going to donate my copy to my local library.

The Moores promote their way of homeschooling as the best way and encourage you to buy their 'Manual' to learn how. If you really want to know about their method, skip this book and get their manual.

Do keep in mind that they were Seventh-Day Adventist, so if you're going to order from their catalog, just know that there are Adventist books in their Bible section.

Info based on stereotypical information - not research  Nov 23, 2003
For example, William Sidis is described as 'burned out', or unbalanced. At the time of his death - his friends did not think that he was either. He wasn't. He rejected capitalism, for that he is remembered, even in new books - as unbalanced. This author did not do research.

almost burned out homeschool mom from Utah  May 22, 2003
I have been homeschooling for three years now, and I realized awhile ago that I had brought "school home" instead of homeschooling. This book gave me confidence to wait until my children are ready (one daughter is 7 and can read, but not well and she does not enjoy it) to even teach the basics. My son (10 yrs. old) hated to read, but backing off and not pushing him helped a great deal, and now he enjoys reading. This book is an excellent help in avoiding burnout. Homeschooling has become enjoyable again and the atmosphere of our home has changed drastically. Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore have much expertise in their field, but they have also experienced much of what they teach. They have a great website
