This highly accessible work draws the reader to the gospel accounts for the purpose of evoking critical thought rather than for persuading for a particular interpretation. An Introduction  Dec 11, 2006
The Stories of Jesus Birth, A Critical Introduction, by Edwin Freed, examines the Gospel stories concerning the birth of Jesus Christ. Most of the book focuses on the genealogies of Jesus found in Mathew and Luke. To understand the differences in the genealogies, and in the birth narratives, Freed examines the literary style of Luke and Mathew to understand their theological background and purpose for writing. Freed relies heavily on both Raymond Brown (The Birth of the Messiah - the best on the topic!) and Richard Horsley (Liberation of Christmas) sometimes agreeing with Horsley when he differs with Brown, as well as taking his own unique position on various topics. At times the book reads scholarly, well researched and covering all arguments. In other places it falls very short, such as; downplaying the importance of tracing the Messiah's Davidic roots, poor arguements for a diminished role of Joseph, the weak arguments against the virgin birth, not recognizing the importance of Bethlehem (or Nazareth) to first century Jewish messianic expectations, and other critical topics. This book is called a critical introduction, but the author is not always focused on the topic and misses much of the significance of the birth narratives, especially in their historical perspective. Since there are only a few books in print on this topic, written at this level (undergraduate), it can be recommended, but not alone. You will not find the full introduction here. Read Raymond Brown, too!
