Item Description...
I'm an old man now. And an old man is entitled to savor his memories and reflections. I live now in hope of a life yet to come when I will once again see the Teacher. So begins the memoir of the Shoemaker of Capernaum, a sharp-eyed, pious craftsman whose most cherished memories are those of Jesus, the captivating teacher who profoundly affected everyone who met him. Jesus changed the shoemaker's life-and the shoemaker kept a journal of what he saw and heard in the midst of Jesus' circle of friends and followers. At the end of his life he puts his notes in order. I can feel him here still. He is telling us about the steadfastness of his Father's love. He is challenging us to attend to the widow and the poor and the orphan and the sick. He is reminding us of a kingdom that we are destined to inherit as his brothers and sisters. And he is embracing us still with those deep eyes and that resonant voice. Brent's remarkable "fable" is born of the author's own deep desire to encounter Jesus for himself. His imagined first-century world on the shores of the Sea of Galilee is a colorful place where an extraordinary teacher brings love, joy, and meaning to the ordinary people who are irresistibly drawn to him. The Shoemaker's Gospel takes readers on an inspiring journey where they ask and answer: Who is Jesus? What does he mean for me?

Publishers Description

Destination: Capernaum
The year: Circa AD 30
What to bring: Imagination, curiosity, and a desire to deepen your faith
In The Shoemaker's Gospel, a fascinating story based on the biblical accounts of Jesus, we are whisked back to the years
of Jesus' earthly ministry and the life-changing effects that it had on all who knew him. Through the eyewitness journal entries of a first-century shoemaker whom Jesus has nicknamed "Soft Shoes," we hear the Lord's soothing but challenging voice as he delivers a parable about what it really means to give generously; we marvel as he heals a girl thought to be dead; we feel his anger as he overturns tables in the temple; and we sense the simultaneous confusion and unspeakable joy as Mary and the disciples realize that their crucified teacher has been raised from the dead
From Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to the Emmaus road appearance, Soft Shoes serves as our energetic yet reflective guide back to a time when a carpenter from Nazareth revealed himself in word and deed as the Son of God and forever changed the course of history. Prepare to embark on an incredible journey that will lead you to a place where you can once again experience Jesus for the first time, a place where your faith can truly flourish.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Good News in a Newsy Framework  Jan 29, 2007
Very interesting perspective, not alone on Jesus and His down to earth persona, but a very reassuring view of God's Creative plan for our human selves.

Some sort of Preface or explanation on the scripture translations and
other references might help. They are a plus (the sharp, today type quotes), but raise questions at times.
The Challenge of Jesus  Oct 20, 2006
The shoemaker's story is presented in such a relaxed manner that this reader felt like part of the story. It is an everyday version of a familar story that is comforting and challenging at the same time. Jesus' message is stated very simply and directly. Jesus reminds us of the Father's love for us and of who we are called to be. Many passages provide food for reflection and discussion. A book club type group would find much to discuss. For example, after listening to Jesus one afternoon, the shoemaker asks himself "Is Jesus calling me to new obligations? To a shift in my patterns, my priorities, my safe lifestyle?"
This story has a very calming effect on me. Maybe it has to do with walking in the shoemaker's shoes and just hanging out with Jesus.
