Item Description...
In this groundbreaking book William Loader shows how the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures created new slants and emphases on sexuality that would leave their mark on the writings of Philo and the New Testament - and ultimately on Christian thought itself. According to Loader, "Some things are lost in translation, others gained." The making of the Septuagint could not help but result in verbal connections, lost emphases, and novel wordplays that opened the door to new interpretations. One particularly important instance of this effect of translation is the Septuagint's treatment of sexuality. In the course of his book Loader explores sexuality as it is presented in the Decalogue, the stories of Creation and the Garden of Eden, and the brief reference to divorce in Deuteronomy 24, looking in turn at their Septuagint translations, their use in Philo, and their possible impact on the New Testament. These fascinating studies have important implications for thinking about gender issues and male-female relations.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Interesting, but Incomplete  Oct 15, 2004
The Septuagint (LXX) was the ancient Greek standard translation of the Jewish Scriptures -- kind of like the Authorized Version / KJV. However, it differed from the Hebrew text we tend to use today. Loader is interested in the impact this translation had on sexual ethics in the New Testament and Philo of Alexandria.
Loader notes how in both lists of the Ten Commandments in the LXX the adultery commandment is placed before murder, and this is reflected in various NT pasages. Then he looks at the creation texts, mostly Genesis 1&2 and how they impacted New Testament use. Along with the gospels and Paul's letters he also has a short bit on the Gospel of Thomas.
The best part of the whole book is the way he puts the texts in parallel columns, both in his text and in the appendices. Seeing the Hebrew and Greek versions side-by-side can really get the mind working, sometimes on issues Loader didn't bother with. In his analysis, the stuff on how Adam and ish are translated is very good, especially the table on p 33.
However, he left out a few interesting discussions. One I noticed was how Paul quoted Genesis 2:24 in 1 Cor 6 with sarx (flesh), but then used soma (body) instead in his own words. For Paul sarx was a theological term for the sinful nature, but soma was neutral. He faithfully quotes the LXX, but then substitutes his preferred terminology. Another point not covered is how the synoptic gospels left out the covet commandment(s). Any careful reader will notice other topics not touched by Loader.
However, beware Loader's translations. Sometimes the proofreading is not quite there. Also, for some reason he wants to make sefer distinct from its standard translations as biblos and biblion. Unaccountably on p. 49 sepher is "list" instead of "book." A few other translation items made me cringe.
Overall an interesting book, as much for how it made my mind work as for how it made Loader's mind work.
