Item Description...
Upon her coronation as Queen, Elizabeth I receives her mother Ann Boleyn's diary and learns of her love for her and her torment at the hands of Henry VIII

Publishers Description
In this "energetic" "(Kirkus Reviews)" re-creation of Anne Boleyn's tragic life -- and death -- Robin Maxwell offers a pitch-perfect version of a bawdy and exuberant time filled with lust, betrayal, love, and murder.
When the young Queen Elizabeth I is entrusted with Anne Boleyn's secret diary, she discovers a great deal about the much-maligned mother she never knew. And on learning the truth about her lascivious and despotic father, Henry VIII, she vows never to relinquish control to any man. But this avowal doesn't prevent Elizabeth from pursuing a torrid love affair with her horsemaster, Robin Dudley -- described with near-shocking candor -- as too are Anne's graphic trysts with a very persistent and lustful Henry. Blending a historian's attention to accuracy with a novelist's artful rendering, Maxwell weaves compelling descriptions of court life and devastating portraits of actual people into her naughty, page-turning tale. The result is a masterpiece of historical fiction -- so prophetic of our time that one would think it were ripped from today's headlines.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
An Excellent Premise - Well Written  May 2, 2008
The conceit that Anne Boleyn left behind a diary for her daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, to read, is a marvelous one. Though this book took a little while to get rolling (thus four stars rather than five), it was well written, basically accurate to the time period and thought-provoking.

Anne comes off a lot better here than she does in other novels, where she is often simply a conniving climber. Here she is a very young, naive woman who, while ambitious (who wouldn't want all those jewels?) is initially vaguely surprised by the attentions paid to her by Henry VIII. True, she is still her own worst enemy, with a sharp tongue and little interest in curbing it. However, she learns hard lessons, and her wish is to pass them along to her beloved daughter, that she might not make the same mistakes. As the intertwining stories met their exquisitely dovetailed peaks, I found myself deeply moved by the tone and the text.

This is well-researched and written, and the flipping from Anne's perspective to Elizabeth's is managed with a deft hand - when you are starting to wonder what's happening in the other half of the story, you are taken there. I was very pleased with this offering from Robin Maxwell, and look forward to future releases.
An ok read  Jan 18, 2008
Read this book for entertainment only, may not be filled with great historical facts, but then it is FICTION.
More like 4 1/2 stars....  Nov 22, 2007
Elizabeth Tudor, the daughter of Anne Boleyn, is now the Queen of England. Her memory of her mother is limited until a visit from an aging confidant of Anne, Lady Matilda Sommerville. Lady Sommerville has Anne's diary, a diary that will provide Elizabeth with an entirely different perspective of Anne Boleyn. Was Anne a traitor, an adulterer, a heretic, or just a mother who wanted the best for her child? Step inside this intimate portrait of Anne Boleyn and decide for yourself just who Anne Boleyn really was....

Having fallen in love with Robin Maxwell's portrayal of a young Anne Boleyn in MADEMOISELLE BOLEYN, it was with great excitement that I started THE SECRET DIARY OF ANNE BOLEYN. Robin Maxwell did not disappoint! Anne's fictional diaries offer up a whole different perspective on this often maligned and perhaps misunderstood woman of history.

Robin Maxwell uses the diary format to its full effect. The story opens up with Elizabeth, newly crowned and still unsure and lacking confidence in her role as Queen. Anne's diaries offer her the wisdom of the mother she barely knew. The diary entries range from the breezy entries of a young lady in love to those of a bitter woman, betrayed. Elizabeth absorbs this knowledge as Robin Maxwell offers up the premise that it was knowledge such as provided by the diary that shaped Elizabeth into the woman history remembers today.

THE SECRET DIARY OF ANNE BOLEYN is Robin Maxwell's first published book. Comparing this book to her most recent book, MADEMOISELLE BOLEYN, I can see how Ms. Maxwell has polished her writing style. Regardless, Robin Maxwell's passion for this time period shines through. THE SECRET DIARY OF ANNE BOLEYN is easily recommended.

It's ok. Not bad, not great.   May 19, 2007
I thought this book as very slow in parts. The approach of a "diary" I thought was not all that great. Time jumped sometimes 6 months to a year between "entries". I understand that it would be even less interesting if the author had put more in there but sometimes I felt that if I didn't already know the story of Henry VIII/Anne Boleyn/Queen Elizabeth I would be lost. What was interesting to me was the idea that Anne Boleyn was not a manipulating person, that instead she was just strolling along and all of a sudden the King wanted her, without her doing anything. I think it's unlikely true but it was an intersting take on the situation.

If you love the era, it's something to fill time, but I would not rush out to read it. It's ok. Not bad, not great.
