Raging Sea is worth 5 stars alone!  Feb 6, 2006
While I do like the first decade better. The last song on the album, which is called Raging Sea is worth every penny by itself!
Great for new listeners  Apr 11, 2005
I have had Michael W Smith's First Decade CD for some time, and have just bought Second Decade. I've always liked his music, but have mainly heard his music through my sister's collection. Only recently did I start purchasing his music for myself.
Second Decade may seem bland to long-time fans, but for relative newcomers to his music, it is a well-chosen collection.
There is a nice mixture of older music along with a couple of new songs, making for a wonderful listening experience.
My favourite track, so far, is 'Above All'. I would prefer this track as a studio recording, but there is nothing wrong with the live recording that is included in this compilation. My other top choice (again, for the moment) is Straight to the Heart.
With the exception of 'Friends', these are the only songs that I am fully familiar with.
The rest are more or less new songs to me, making this a great purchase.
The worst of . . .   Jan 17, 2005
It's almost like clockwork. Take any artist with longevity, and look over their career. The first decade always finds the artist breaking new ground, and doing work that really hits people. Then the second decade finds that artist really loosing their way (see U2 for reference). They confuse doing everything that doesn't come naturally to them with "breaking new ground." Then somwhere around a 20th to 25th anniversary, the artist does an "anniversary" tour where they go back and rediscover the early stuff. This usually wakes the artist up, reminds him/her of what he/she does best, and they go on to become great again.

The unfortunate fact remains though, the second decade is always pretty wretched. This can easily be said for Mr W-Smith. After he acheived an artistic and commercial peak with the 1992 album "Change Your World," and an ensuing tour, he gave us all a retrospective "First 10 Years" hits album, and a fantastic live video documenting what had to be his greatest concert tour ever (complete with a full brass section), but then we all had to know it'd be downhill for a while.

This collection highlights some of those lows. Granted, one thing you've gotta love about Smitty is his versatility. He literally can do just about anything. Problem is he spent the last 10 years literally trying to do everything BUT being Michael W. Smith. First there was his attempt to be an art rocker (which he isn't) in 1995, then a pathetic attempt to become Bryan Adams in 1998, then the depressing "This is Your Time" in 1999, followed by a rather noble and decent attempt to become another Michael Kamen in 2000 (about the only real highlight). All of this was wrapped up with a duo of worship albums released in 01 and 02, and a retrospective tour in 03, documented on a DVD released last year which is already rather difficult to find (his record label isn't exactly impressing me here). And I'm sorry, but overall none of this stuff is what I'd call relevant material when looking at the career of Mr. W Smith. When you think of his songs, which one's come to mind? Hmmmm . . Friends, Rocketown, Secret Ambition, Go West Young Man, Love One Another, Place in this World, and I Will Be Here For You. Besides a 2003 remake of Friends, you'll find none of these tracks on this compilation. Granted, they shouldn't be here as it is exactly what the title says "The Second Decade." Unfortunately, that second decade just wasn't up to the first.

Silver lining, though. Frequently, when an artist does an anniversary tour, they get their groove back and start being good again. Although judging by Healing Rain, I think we'll have to wait for Smitty's 25th anniversary tour before we can hope for a return to the glory of I2Eye, Big Picture, and Change Your World.
It was OK . . .  Dec 18, 2004
I hate to give a Michael W. Smith album less than 5-Stars, but I have to admit that I didn't really like the selection of songs for this album (I'm sure there were better songs of his between 93-03). I mean SOME of the songs were wonderful, but most of them were just not that great. My favorites were . . .

- Signs (My VERY favorite - I kind of like the CD just for this one)
- This Is Your Time
- Live the Life
- Above All

I do like Friends, but I didn't like someone else singing with him. The others . . . I guess I'd have to hear them a lot to begin to like them. I would rather recommend The First Decade (I LOVE that one), and Healing Rain (I REALLY LOVE that one)! But, I don't want to say that Michael W. Smith did a bad job on this one - I simply don't like these songs. YOU might have a different "music outlook" than I and actually enjoy it, but for me - I'd rather listen to a different one. But for those of you who will enjoy it - good job Michael W. Smith (sorry about the 4-Stars).
I wish he had called me to help him pick the selection  Apr 20, 2004
I realize every MWS fan has his own favorite CD, songs, memory, etc., but I think the producers of this CD could have done a little better. As I said on the "I'll Lead You Home" CD review, nothing MWS produces is bad. Its just degrees of good. Since I didn't care as much for that CD as I have for his others, and since many of those songs made their way on here -- at the expense of better ones -- I have to ding this just a little. But keep in mind that I have everything MWS has ever produced (except maybe one VHS video).

First, the good stuff. As he did for the 1993 First Decade CD, MWS adds a couple of new studio tracks, plus a new arrangement of Friends, that are first rate. Since MWS hasn't produced an originally written and produced vocal CD since 1999, these songs were refreshing and possibly a hint as to what's up next. My small problem with this compilation is the other stuff put on it. From 1992 through 1998, MWS produced only 1 CD -- I'll Lead You Home. Since then, in the same time frame, he's done 6 projects before this. Perhaps due to it being that long ago, he puts 4 of the Lead You Home tracks (one remixed) on here. That's fine, but considering his best work (or at least one of his two best) "This is Your Time" only has one entry -- the title cut, I think two from Lead You Home and three from Time would have been better. In addition, while "Cry For Love" is a great song, the rest from the Lead you Home CD aren't even the best ones on there.

OK, enough complaining. For those of you getting started with Christian music, this is a great place to start. There's no indication that MWS is anything but what his image projects: a man that stands behind the message he sings about. For 20 years, this guy has produced some incredible music (including for others) and while other artists that came before and after have drifted away for one reason or another, MWS still produces and sells. I'm not a big fan of where so-called contemporary Christian music has gone. I'm not buying much new of this music, but I'll never pass up a MWS CD.
