How the Church Domesticated Jesus

With his unique blend of eloquence and insight, the esteemed Harvard minister Peter J. Gomes invites us to hear anew the radical nature of Jesus' message of hope and change. Using examples from ancient times as well as from modern pop culture, The Scandalous Gospel of Jesus shows us why the good news is every bit as relevant today as when it was first preached.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
The Liberal Social Gospel  May 21, 2010
By the Gospel, Peter Gomes means the social gossip. The irony is that while he belittles fundamentalist for interpreting the bible literally, he interprets the sayings of Jesus literally to justify his insistence on the social gossip. I felt somewhat embarrassed for Dr. Gomes constant need to drop in stories that happen to try to show how great he is. He lets us know he meet the Queen Mother, received an honorary degree and mentions Harvard at least a dozen times. He should take the best advice in the book that he borrowed from Paul Tillich and accept the fact he is accepted and maybe he wont feel the need to impress his readers as much.
Insightful look at the Gospel  Feb 5, 2010
I have been extemely pleased with the responce I have received from my Sunday School class each week as we read and discuss a different chapter of the book. While the author's take on the subject can be controversial and there is disagreement in the class it is thought provoking and has provide lively discussion.
Wonderful!  Dec 10, 2009
This is a book that all people - whether Christian or not - should read. It really does help you to understand what's so good about the Good News.
A disturbing book  Nov 20, 2009
Dr. Gomes takes off the gloves in this hard hitting comparison of what Christ actually taught to what we like to think He taught. It is a book that can't be read without a pencil in hand to take notes and underline telling phrases. It would make a great subject for a serious study class.
The Scandalous gospel of Jesus  Jun 23, 2009
The Scandalous Gospel of Jesus: What's So Good About the Good News? There is a high degree of thoughtful theology in Mr. Gomes' book, yet, he fails to adhere to the ground rules he sets for all of Christendom - we should all be "modest" when espousing our theological perspectives - I could not agree more. Gomes wants those who are conservative to be more open and thoughtful, but when it comes to his own particular theological perspectives, he leaves little room for disagreement. I am not necessarily in opposition to his theological opinions, in fact, I agree with most of what he says, but I am disappointed in a Harvard Professor who fails to discern the obvious countradictions in his methodology. I thought the book very good, despite its lack of modesty.
