Item Description...
Overview
Picking up where he left off in The Historical Jesus: A Comprehensive Guide, Theissen discusses religion as "a cultural sign language that promises a gain in life by corresponding to an ultimate reality"; and presents Christianity as a religion with elements of myth, ritual, ethics, and an emergent symbolic system.

Publishers Description
In these distinguished Oxford lectures, Theissen picks up where he left off in The Historical Jesus (1998). Employing the notion of religion as a "cultural sign language which promises a gain in life by corresponding to an ultimate reality," he plots the emergence of Christianity as a religion, with elements of myth, ritual, ethics, and an emergent symbolic system. He expands upon the historical, social, and theological analysis of his earlier works to cover such issues as the relationship of Jesus to the earliest churches, power, possessions, interpretations of Jesus' death, and the separation of the church and synagogue.Theissen's most complete and systematic treatment of early Christianity to dateTraces the gradual emergence of the most important beliefs about JesusEncompasses beliefs, ethics, ritual, and the origin of the New Testament canon in one synthesis

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Difficult but very rewarding  Aug 19, 2007
Surely this is a demanding book, Theissen assumes good knowledge of the NT itself, with its social and political situation and pagan thought at the time, and also of religious studies generally. I see it as an attempt to treat New Testament Theology from a new perspective, that of the psychology, sociology and philosophy of religion, rather than just writing another conventional "theology". It is a pioneering work and repays thorough study. One of the very best books on the Early Church!

Dense but interesting; Misses part of the story  Oct 18, 2004
This book takes a social-science perspective on the development of the early Christian religion. It analyzes the various axioms and motifs adopted by the early Christians, and how they distinguished themselves from Jewish practice.

There are two shortcomings that really detracted from my enjoyment of this book: First, the book (a translation from German) is poorly written. The prose is dense, circular, and difficult to follow. Second, although the author seeks to explore religion from an "open perspective," he does not give enough attention to Pagan, social, and political influences that also shaped the earliest churches.
