Item Description...
Arizona, 1882: Saloon owner Jake Scully knew his rough frontier town was no place for Lacey Stewart. Ten years after he'd sheltered her from harm, Lacey was a grown woman who deserved a respectable man, not a jaded rogue like Jake. But Jake's "delicate lady" had a mind of her own.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Passable, predictable Western romance  Jun 3, 2009
Jake Scully is a saloon owner in a small Western town who is the de facto guardian of a beautiful young woman, Lacey, who returns after attending finishing school in New York. There is a subplot about repressed memories involving a gold strike of Lacey's grandfather, but mostly the story concerns Jake, who's world-weary and sophisticated and the naive but lovable Lacey. I read the book in a few hours and it's predictable but okay.
ok...  Nov 13, 2008
well...not that great. Not really plausible, to be honest. kept me occupied, but not satisfied.
Predictable yet enjoyable  Oct 14, 2008
This deserves more a 3.5 star rating but since I couldn't put it down I rounded up.

This book had a nice story, more original than most I've read in this genre, and great characters.

After her grandfather (her guardian) is murdered and her home destroyed by a mysterious fire, 8 yr old Lacey escapes to Jake Scully, a friend of her grandfathers whom she had never met. She automatically feels trust toward him and he becomes her guardian, though soon after he sends her away to school back east. He continues to see to her financial needs but never visits or sends for her.

Lacey returns ten years later a beautiful lady, grateful to her guardian and looking forward to taking care of him in his old age to show her appreciation for his care. But when she arrives she is suprised to find her guardian is a handsome young man.

Jake Scully isn't a bad guy. He is a man with a good heart and but a disreputable job. He's a saloon owner who has probably dallied with some saloon girls-- though he is opposed to prostitution.

There is a villain with a sinister plot but that is really just a sidenote-- it hints at suspense that never comes to fruition.

Another reviewer was very critical of the writing. Though I must agree that this book is no literary masterpiece, the review was a little harsh. The book was fun to read. And, no, a middle schooler could not have done a better job. At times it was repetitive and Lacey sounded quite redundant. A bit too much "He has his own life to lead" and then Jake with his "She deserves better" bit... it got a little annoying. But most of these books have the same exact struggle between their characters, otherwise there would be no book.

All in all, an easy read. It is fun to watch it all happen and nice with Jake realizes that he really is a decent guy.
Great Book!!!  Aug 1, 2008
Let's face it, Jake needed redeeming, and Ms. Barbieri gives us the gal to do just that. This is an enjoyable read, and hard to put down. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book--you won't be able to put it down until you finish.
Poor writing, character development, and plot.  Jul 29, 2008
I own over 500 inspirational books and when they came out with the historical line it's safe to say I eagerly bought them all. So you could say I am a huge fan. That's why it's so hard for me to give this such a low rating. But sadly in this case it is not worth your time.

The writing is so poorly done. My junior high cousin could do better. Let me give you an example. "Lacy turned to the washstand. She was unbuttoning her shirtwaist when she looked at the soap dish and stopped cold. (Now tell me what are you expecting to come next? It's a western so what could possibly make her stop cold? Could it be a snake? Maybe a peeping tom, or maybe even a deadly spider? no here is what is says) . . .when she looked at the soap dish and stopped cold. She had used up the last of her soap that morning." page 99. No kidding! From there she walks to the mercantile. Do you see what I mean? Who's editing these books? Better yet who is passing this off as a "New York Times Best Selling Author" as it says on the front cover? I know the NYT has had their scandles but this is very poor writing and a great disappointment!

Suffice it to say that the plot is just as bad, especially when 50 percent of the story AND dialogue is devoted to the antagonist. I wanted to like these main characters but I spent most of my time reading and putting up with the bad guy, and Lacy's repeated dreams. Over and Over . . . after the first time we get it.

Oh well, I am not going to go any further. I love the inspirational genre, and so appreciate these authors, but usually they are gifted and professional. So, don't give up on the genre, but skip this one. I really enjoyed many of the other in this historical line. Try Masked by Moonlight by Allie Pleiter for a place to start.
