Item Description...
Holiness should mark the life of every Christian. But holiness is often hard to understand. Learn what holiness is and how to say "no" to the things that hinder it.

HOLINESS. THE CHRISTIAN'S JOINT VENTURE WITH GOD. "Be holy, for I am holy," commands God to His people. But holiness is something that is often missed in the Christian's daily life. According to Jerry Bridges, that's because we're not exactly sure what our part in holiness is. In The Pursuit of Holiness, he helps us see clearly just what we should rely on God to do-and what we should accept responsibility for ourselves.
Whether you're continuing your pursuit of holiness or just beginning, the principles and guidelines in The Pursuit of Holiness will challenge you to obey God's command of holiness.

Great for a Bible Study group....  Oct 13, 2004
I have taught through this book twice in the past five years. Each time I have been challenged in my Christian walk. The accompanying study guide with scriptural references and thought-provoking study questions make this relevant for both new and mature believers. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

As Christians, we serve a holy God and are called to live holy lives. This book beautifully encourages believers to focus on God's holiness as we renew our minds and lives in holiness.

This book is a keeper!  Nov 9, 2003
This book has motivated me to live a life pleasing to God more than any other book I've read. I have left very little UNhighlighted in it! This book teaches the difference between God's role and ours in the battle for holiness and it challenged me and gave me the desire to examine my life against the life God desires. It has helped me in ALL areas of my life, but especially in the areas of particular stuggle for me, and caused me to desire to fully surrender to God's plan as laid out in His Word. This is a great book, not to be missed!
Uninspiring  Sep 10, 2003
In this brief book Jerry Bridges urges Christian to purse holy lives. He laments that for many evangelicals personal holiness is seen as an impossible achievement. Bridges tries to walk the line between obedience to God on one hand, and legalism on the other. He does this by distinguishing between his private struggles with sin (lust, ice cream, television, etc.) and the absolutes dictated by Scripture.

Unfortunately, this book is like almost every Navigator book I have read. It is written for a Sunday School audience and often sounds like a commercial for other Navigator material I read this book just after finishing Richard Fosters Celebration of Discipline and I could not help but compare the two books. Foster was a breath of fresh air, inspiring me to purse the Godly life; whereas Bridges proved to be uninspiring. What is lacking is the joy of the Christian life. It is not until the last chapter that the author develops the concept of Christian joy, even then, it sounds as if the only joy we are going to find the joy in the midst of suffering. Foster, on the other hand sees the joy of the Christian life at every turn.

Bridges has an inadequate view of the Holy Spirit, almost equating the leading of the Holy Spirit with Bible study. True, the Word is the sword of the Spirit, but I enjoyed Fosters charismatic emphasis on the heading of the Holy Spirit. Does Bridges have any fun in his life? Would he listen to Rock n Roll music? Reading his book reminded me of Christians weddings- Boring! Boring! Boring! Everyone is afraid to have a good time lest someone be offended. I did not like this book. Other than the fact there are some good sermons in this book it did not provide any real insight that helped by ministry.

What Are God's Role & Our Role in Our Pursuit of Holiness?  Nov 20, 2002
Someone has well said that nature forms us, sin deforms us, penitentiary reforms us, education informs us, the world conforms us, but only Jesus transforms us.

But how does Jesus transform us to be holy and more like Him? Do we simply "let go and let God"? What should we rely on God to do? And what are our responsibilities in this pursuit of holiness? The book addresses those questions.

This book is helpful for every Christian. It's true that we are saved not by what we do but by the perfect righteousness of Christ imputed to us by faith. But pursuit of holiness is not an option for Christians because saving faith creates within us the desire to be Christ-like.

Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32) By knowing the truth of who we are in Christ and the victory that Christ has overcome for us over sin, we can then claim this truth and be free--no longer slaves to sin (Rom. 6:17-18). This book reminds me again of this truth (who we are in Christ), what we should rely upon God to do, and what we should accept as our responsibilities in our pursuit of holiness. It discusses also the nature and tactics of satan's temptations, how to express our dependence on the Holy Spirit, principles for personal disciplines, how to put sin to death, etc. (There's also a sequel to this book titled The Practice of Godliness).
One of the best Christian books on holiness I've read.  Oct 17, 2002
Jerry Bridges shows us in this great book how Christians must depend on God's grace at all times and yet also striving with perseverance to pursuit holiness. We will never be perfectly holy in our present life, nevertheless it is God's will that we must always pursue such holiness so that we may be increasingly changed into His Son's image more and more everyday. This book will greatly humble and challenge every Christian to stop flirting with sin (however small it may be), and to start living a life that is pleasing to the holy God whom we worship and adore.
