A Much Needed Counter-View to the Consumer Based Church  Oct 4, 2007
Terry Tekkyl's passion for God -- along with a sense of humor that comes through appropriately and clearly in his workshops and preaching -- is much needed in the church in America today, and especially in what used to be called 'mainline' churches. In The Presence Based Church he makes a strong case for more emphasis on the church seeking and ministering to God in Jesus Christ, rather than putting the focus on seeking more people and adapting the church to the preferences of people simply to attract them.

His description of church models in America today is a helpful analysis:
1. The Cell Based Church -- personal relationships in small groups
2. The Purpose Driven Church -- defining, communicating, and organizing the church around mission or purpose.
3. The Program Based Church -- offering a large variety of activities to appeal to as many different people as possible.
4. The Apostolic Church -- grounded in the vision of a charismatic church pastor/leader.
5. The Seeker Church -- weekend services tailored around the needs and preferences of 'seekers,' to lead them into discipleship and church life.
6. The Meatloaf Church -- the mixing of ingredients of two or more of the above models into a hybrid church.

In contrast, Tekkyl proposes the Presence Based Church, not so much another model for how to do church as an approach to doing church in any ortganizational model. The orientation of the Presence Based Church is clearly toward ministering to God and pleasing God, rather than primarily being focused (first) on ministering to people and pleasing people. It is, Tekkyl says, a "Mary" based congregation in contrast to most "Martha" based congregations.

The author has clearly given great thought and research to this subject. He frequently and freely quotes passages from other books on worship, prayer, and church. Much of the book is an exploration of worship among the Hebrews with the Ark of the Covenant. There are also references to churches and ministries that Tekkyl indicates are Presence Based congregations.

He also brings a much needed perspective on pastoral ministry in the local church, pointing out that the spiritual orientation of the pastor and other worship leaders is central to being able to lead people into worship and other church ministry.

Tekkyl says that Jesus' words to Martha (of Mary and Martha fame among Christians) is not intended to be a criticism of Martha's desire to serve the Lord, but rather an affirmation of Mary's better choice. I suspect he may believe that to be the case in terms of the other models of churches he briefly describes -- yet his description came across to me as critical of using direct mail and other methods to reach people and bring them to faith in Christ.

Clearly there IS something positive and different about the church that focuses on God's presence throughout the congregation, including community worship. Clearly that WILL be attractive to some people, because God Himself attracts them in Jesus Christ.

However, Tekkyl's book could be understood to say (or imply) that evangelistic methodologies and concern for hospitality to the stranger in the facilities are rather superficial concerns. There is still a place for making the church welcoming to people in human terms as well as giving more attention to focusing on ministering to God in worship. Most churches feel they are a friendly church, when in fact what it means is they are friendly to one another.

Likewise, the book could be understood to imply that one type of worship style is better than others. I don't think Tekkyl believes that (other than Presence Based is the intent), yet that could be a reasonable conclusion by a reader. Some persons do find God's presence, for example, through liturgy and the old hymns of the faith.

Lastly, there is an implied assumption that if the Presence of God is real, people feeling the Presence is the measure of whether or not God is actually present. The struggles recently revealed by the letters of Mother Teresa show that sometimes persons of strong faith must continue to serve God and people, even if they don't feel the Presence near. The same could be said about worship. We worship God because God is worthy of our worship, whether or not on a particular Sunday we especially feel his presence.

I'm glad I read the book. As a pastor, I needed the reminder that worship and my ministry is above all for an Audience of One. And as Tekkyl notes, it is much more important to be focused on attracting God into our midst than attracting huge numbers of people. Thanks, Terry.

The Presence Based Church  Mar 15, 2006
I have been living my life and conducting our ministry life to one end, to know God better. This book articulates our pursuit to a tee. Terry does a fantastic job describing what a church should look like that has a passionate heart for God's presence to be manifest among God's people. Not only in our corporate gatherings but in our everyday lives and in every area of church life. Let's face it, if God doesn't show up, why have a church. Terry also describes the difference between the corporate "Consumer Church" that has people as it's ministry focus compared to a "Mary of Bethany" church that has Jesus as the ministry focus. The book was used as a confirmation from the Lord that as a Presence based church we are moving in the right direction to want to know Him more.
