Publishers Description
Discover the precious present and find yourself!

A simple story, engagingly told, The Precious Present does more than capture the heart; it is a valuable gift for anyone seeking a deeper level of fulfillment and personal happiness.

Telling a story of vital significance in today's fast-paced, competitive environment, The Precious Present will help you discover the joy in life we all seek--whether we go to Wall Street or around the world to find it.

Just as Spencer Johnson's bestseller The One Minute Manager helped rehumanize the workplace around the world, The Precious Present helps each reader rediscover his or her own humanity.  This beautiful tale demonstrates the delicate art of balancing your spiritual and material needs, and shows how this goal can be maddeningly elusive--and gloriously attainable.
"The Precious Present puts life in its simplest form.  We should all follow its message and live life in the wonderful state The Precious Present awards each of us.  I read it to all of my teams before we take the floor for the first day of practice."
--Rick Pitino, author of Success is a Choice
Spencer Johnson, M.D., is the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including The One Minute Manager, all in the entertaining style of a parable that contains useful information readers can use in their own lives.  There are more than thirteen million copies of his books in print in over twenty-five languages.

Dr. Johnson's education includes a psychology degree from the University of Southern California, an M.D. from the Royal College of Surgeons and medical clerkships at Harvard Medical School and the Mayo Clinic.
Once there was a boy. . . who listened to an old man.

And, thus, began to learn about The Precious Present.

"It is a present because it is a gift," the contented man explained.

And it is called The Precious Present, because it is the best present of all.

When the boy asked why, the old man explained.

"It is the best present a person can receive because anyone who receives such a gift is happy forever."

"Wow!" the little boy exclaimed. "I hope someone gives me The Precious Present. Maybe I'll get it for Christmas."

The boy ran off to play.

And the old man smiled.

He liked to watch the little boy play.

He saw the smile on the youngster's face and heard him laughing as he swung from a nearby tree.

The boy was happy.

And it was a joy to see.

The old man also liked to watch the boy work.

He even rose early on Saturday mornings to watch the little laborer across the street mow the lawn.

The boy actually whistled while he worked.

The little child was happy no matter what he was doing.

It was, indeed, a joy to behold.

When he thought about what the old man had said, the boy thought he understood.

He knew about presents. . .

Like the bicycle he got for his birthday and the gifts he found under the tree on Christmas morning.

But as the boy thought more about it, he knew.

The joy of toys never lasts forever.

The boy began to feel uneasy.

"What then," he wondered,"is The Precious Present?

"What could be so good. . . so much better than any other present. . . that it is called The Precious Present?

"What could possibly make me happy forever?"

He found it difficult to even imagine the answer.

And so he returned to ask the old man.

"Is The Precious Present a magical ring? One that I might put on my finger and make all my wishes come true?"

"No," he was told.

The Precious Present Has Nothing To Do With Wishing.

The Precious Present   Apr 8, 2008
This book is excellent. I have purchased several copies to give to friends, usually have at least 1 or 2 extras.

SHORT BUT POWERFUL  Mar 25, 2008
This is an amazingly short little book, probably takes 10 - 15 minutes to read. I had checked it out of the library, read it through twice, but decided the truth was so important that I wanted a copy in my collection to remind me occasionally of how important this is. So, yes, I am very appreciative of the message, and feel that it is very important. It calms me greatly when I am stressed or worried about the future or the past.

The Precious Present is Wasted Reading This Book  Mar 10, 2008
I had been told about THE PRECIOUS PRESENT by a well-meaning colleague. Apparently, she read a few passages from it as "motivation" for the volleyball team she helped coach (something she apparently heard that Rick Pattino did with his college basketball players at one point). Other people have told me how "meaningful" and "inspirational" they have found the book. Therefore, my expectations for THE PRECIOUS PRESENT were higher than they should have been and I reminded myself of that after first reading it. I waited for a few days and decided to re-read the book (even though it is 74 pages, the most words on a page is about 30--most of Dr. Suess' books are longer). My opinion of the book didn't change with the re-read. Basically, THE PRECIOUS PRESENT is a book about carpe diem that's told in a type of parable with a bunch of simple and empty platitudes. The parable-approach of the "story" only has one message and keeps repeating several times throughout the book. There are children stories told much better that also include illustrations, e.g. Dr. Suess' OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO, that have the same or similar message. I really can't recommend anyone actually buying the book, but it might give a little bit of encouragement to someone who is struggling with unhappiness (though a Bible verse would probably be just as good and probably more indepth).

Changed my life - wonderful book  Jan 5, 2008
This book is wonderful. I was read to, then given the book by a friend, and I have gone back to it many *many* times. It seems almost a child's book, but for the adult child looking for ... what? The Precious Present, of course! I've used this book as a metaphor for some of my clients, and I highly, highly recommend it. This book, actually, was my stepping-stone into meditation, mindfulness, and Zen or Buddhist philosophies. However, it is not religious or overtly spiritual -- that's just the direction I took it. This is a beautiful, 15-minute read. Well worth it.

Simply Gratifying  Aug 24, 2007
A dear friend first gave me this book, and it has had a profound impact on me over the years. As tempting as it might be to live in the past or plan too frenetically for the future, this book grounds you solidly in the here and now.
