Reviews - What do our customers think?
prayer ministry team use  Feb 13, 2008
A member of our church prayer ministry team had seen this Bible recommended in Pray! magazine and had a copy. She recommended it to all of us as a help in praying the scripture passages as we read. The sections on Prayer Traditions, Programs, Paths, Prompts, Quotes, Quotes from Hymns, and Topical Guide to Bible Prayers are excellent and the text has side columns with prayers for those passages.
Prayer Bible  Nov 29, 2007
This is a great bible, although I think I would have liked a hard cover. My husband actually reads it more than I do because he loves it so much too! Thanks
Great Resource  Nov 30, 2005
The Prayer Bible is a great resource for the Christian life. I think most Christians would agree that we need to recover a strong life of prayer. The value of this book is that directs us to pray the Scriptures. This is a full-text Bible, with side-columns that gives prompting to use God's Word to direct the content and attitude of your prayers. These alone are worth the prices of the book. The practice of praying the Scriptures is a practice that finds precedent in the Bible itself. For example, Jonah prayed using the language of Scripture (cf. Jonah 4:2; Exod 34:6-7); Mary prayed using the language of Scripture (cf. Luke 1:46-55; 1 Sam 2:1-10); the early Christians prayed using the language of Scripture (cf. Acts 4:24-30; Psalms 146, 2); even our Lord Jesus prayed using the language of Scripture (cf. Matt 27:46; Luke 23:46; Ps 22:1; 31:5). Praying the Scriptures is something we should make a part of our prayer life, because it allows God himself to teach how to pray. Thus, praying God's Word will mean our prayers will more effective and God-honoring. They will be shaped by the truth of the Scriptures which teaches us the priorities of prayer. This means we can move beyond the clichéd, "Dear Jesus, just come and be with us today." The Prayer Bible helps us in this.

The Prayer Bible also contains a series of quotes, prayer guides, prayer paths (themed prayers through the Scriptures), and many other resources to help us become familiar with the Bible's teaching on the practice of prayer. (For more on this, see the details above, listed by this site.)

I only have two disappointments with the Prayer Bible. My first disappointment involves the translation. The Prayer Bible is published with the New Living Translation (NLT). The NLT is a revision of the old Living Bible. The Living Bible was loved by many but had some serious problems (not least of which because it was thought of as a translation, when it was really a paraphrase). The NLT corrects many of those mistakes, and as a dynamic translation, I like the NLT. However, I much prefer a more literal translation - my favorite is the English Standard Version (ESV). A translation like the ESV allows for a more detailed study of the Scriptures. And while I frequently consult various translations in my sermon prep (e.g. The Message, NLT, NIV, TNIV, KJV, etc.), I enjoy doing my study and devotional reading out of the same translation. So, I would love to see something like this produced with the ESV. This is really a very minor drawback, and I think the Prayer Bible can be used effectively regardless of the translation you like to use (it just means you have to have two Bible out!)

My second disappointment is a little more substantial, and I believe, more significant. As mentioned before, the Prayer Bible contains numerous asides, quotes, and teaching on prayer. What is missing in all of this is a consistent theology of prayer. That is to say, the various notes and directions are all over the place theologically, coming from very diverse church traditions. The notes move from comments by Hannah Whithall Smith to Walter Brueggemann to Bill Hybels and many people in between. If one were doing a study on prayer, this would be very helpful. But as a pastor who desires to teach something consistently, it is important to have a unified approach to the subject. This is not the case and so these sections should be read with a measure of discernment.

These two disappointments aside, the Prayer Bible is worth buying. In fact, the directions for prayer that comes from the Scriptures themselves can be a valuable resource for developing a prayer life that is energized by God's own Word.

If you're looking for a theology of prayer I would look to Goldsworthy's book, Prayer and the Knowledge of God. For a theologically-informed book of practical help, see Carson's excellent book, A Call to Spiritual Reformation. Some other good books on prayer include: Reaching the Ear of God (Mack); A Method for Prayer (Henry); Practical Prayer (Prime); Teach Us to Pray (ed. Carson); The Valley of Vision (Bennett).
Great prayer tool  Nov 1, 2003
This bible is very inspirational and well organized to find prayers for any need. There are also themed prayer programs for extended prayer with scripture.
