The Popes of Pentecostal Television Who are they and why do they and some of their spouses act and dress so weird? How do they attract so many viewers? Can these viewers ever see the light? Many people depend on a church or a church leader or televangelist to connect them with God. They come to believe that they cannot experience God?s presence or have a dialogue with God without an intermediary or facilitator. Help is on the way! In The Popes of Pentecostal Television I try to explain the background and motives of the leaders of Pentecostal Television What is a Pope and where there authority comes from? The difference between a "Pope" and a "True Leader". It is my sincere hope that this book will help those caught in this web of deception and dependence and to guide them to break free and find their own way with God. I believe it is what God really wants!

Reviews - What do our customers think?
An honest and healing book  Jan 26, 2006
The "Popes of Pentecostal Television" is a very helpful book. There are few books like it. It takes a candid look at the televangelists and measures them by biblical, psychological, and historical standards. It clearly shows the manipulative and self-aggrandizing ways that self-serving people use to promote their message and their income. This book is especially helpful too those who are confused by televangelism and the extremes of Pentecostal and charismatic practices. It helped me and should nelp anyone who feels abused by emotional manipulation to find answers and healing of their damaged lives. It is an impressive and not-to-be-forgotten book.
Self-Made TV 'Popes' Confuse & Deceive the Vulnerable  Aug 17, 2005
Ken John's book is a remarkable and informative expose of the manipulation, silliness and self-absorption of those he calls, The Popes of Pentecostal Television.

He writes, "The Popes proudly claim that God is especially active in them. They guarantee they hear things from God that other `prophets' do not hear, and that they alone speak for God, and in His best voice. Like all good marketers, Pentecostal TV dangles exaggerated outcomes before its prospective investors...the absolute promise of MIRACLES, PERSONAL REVELATION and ECSTASY."

Kenneth Johns is uniquely qualified to write about Pentecostal Television. His grandfather, King David Johns, was a pioneer of the Pentecostal movement in the early 1900's. Mr. Johns was for eighteen years the pastor of a Pentecostal church. The book contains a prodigious amount of research, unraveling the struggles and pains of many Pentecostal believers.

Johns writes that without question many millions of people have been blessed by God in the Pentecostal church, however, the unorthodox and unscriptural Popes of Pentecostal Television sow confusion and deceit in the hearts of vulnerable viewers, and that TV's `charismatic celebrities' confound the media and world-wide audiences which in turn discredit them--along with trustworthy, responsible Christian ministries.

Johns also sees a darker issue for Pentecostal TV viewers. The manipulated emotional highs associated with Pentecostalism can be addictive, complete with serious withdrawal symptoms, including guilt, self-doubts, and fear. Many Pentecostal TV viewers spend fortunes making donations which they think will gain them favor with God. Others make costly pilgrimages to conferences and crusades where `The Popes of PTV' promise miracles to solve all of life's problems.
The so-called `PTV Popes' also teach that true spirituality involves ecstasy and being swept up into spiritual seizure, just like the pagan worship style of singing, dancing, chanting and sexual titillation that the Apostle Paul warned against in his letters to the early Church.

Instead Johns points out that the Holy Spirit works with believers in conscious and voluntary partnership, not by overpowering them. The mark of the Holy Spirit on the believer's life is not manifested by speaking in tongues, falling down backwards, or laughing uncontrollably.

Johns' book is a powerful guide in helping `PTV' victims understand their Pentecostal past, recover from charismatic pain and confusion, and discover they can do business with God without paying a `Pope.' The book is soundly based on Biblical teaching, church history and case studies.

Other topics covered in The Popes of Pentecostal Television include: "Ecstasy on Sunday Nights", "Counterfeit Spirituality", "Toxic Charm," "A Seductive Paradise," "The Revised Edition of the Popes' Bible," and "Pope of the Year."

pentecostal bashing.  Aug 14, 2005
The author has a major hang up against Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches and all that goes with them. (certain gifts of the Spirit etc.) He trys to point out he is only going after the television preacher bunch but, he paints with a very broad brush that covers most all Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians. If your looking for a book that covers all of the faults of the Pentecostal movement "buy it" it's just what your looking for. If your looking for a book that brings unity among the breathern. this is not it.
