Item Description...
Issues of war and terrorism have concentrated attention once again on the role of the use of force in the world today. Published in 1973, Professor John Ferguson's The Politics of Love remains a timely and relevant treatise on the alternatives to violence. In a scholarly yet accessible account, he looks at the New Testament to reveal a Christian basis for pacifism and non-violence. Personal involvement and commitment, he emphasises, can have a more profound effect to bring about much needed change than arms expenditure and brute force.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
The worthy standard book on New Testament pacifism  Dec 7, 2003
The Politics of Love was written to replace G.H.C. MacGregor's New Testament Basis of Pacifism as the Fellowship of Reconciliation's basic 'text' on the subject. Published in 1973, John Ferguson's book continues to be a worthy one-volume summary of the biblical basis of nonviolence as a central theme of Christian discipleship.

Ferguson never claimed to be a full-time biblical scholar, but his deep familiarity with the Bible and biblical scholarship as well as Greek and Roman sources of the New Testament era, are evident in this book. In the section on the New Testament, he meets objections to pacifist interpretations with clarity as well as charity and humor. Equally valuable in this book are the chapters on the peace witness of early Christians and on the political dimensions of Christian faithfulness.

Aside from its important contents, which every Christian should at least consider, this book was clearly written by someone who loves the English language; it is a pleasure to read.
