More About John Bunyan

John Bunyan John Bunyan (1628 1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose.

John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim' s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan' s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford.

In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

After his release, he continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War, Visions of Heaven and Hell, and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
pilgrim's progress  Jan 9, 2007
I purchased this book for my husband as a Christmas
gift. He was in the process of reading it and found that pages144-177 were missing. The book is useless to us.
One Good Book  May 23, 2006
This is a great book. It has helped many Christians throughout history in their Christian walk. I would highly recommend getting this nice edition. Give it to your son for his birthday gift. Give it to your daugther before she goes into the lion's den of college.
Great Christian Book  Jul 16, 2001
The book is told from the third person perspective in the context of a dream. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the narrator follows a character named Christian from the time he leaves the City of Destruction and his family, accepting the path Chirst lays out for him, and watches Christian progress through his earthly journey until he reaches Heaven. Many of the elements encountered in the Christian faith are personified as characters that Christian encounters. The second half of the book tells the account of Christian's wife's and children's journey toward Heaven. The margins of the book are filled with scripture references that go along with the story. A good background in protestant theology makes the book much more enjoyable. I found The Pilgram's Progress to be very insightful.
