More About John Bunyan

John Bunyan John Bunyan (1628 1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose.

John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim' s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan' s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford.

In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

After his release, he continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War, Visions of Heaven and Hell, and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great dramatization  Mar 13, 2007
My wife had been bugging me for months to buy the Pilgrim's Progress on CD, so that we could listen to it during the weeks that our Sunday School class was studying the book. I had heard dramatizations like this before, and I thought they always sounded a little corny. I couldn't imagine listening to a bunch of silly voices read the story.

I was very much in the wrong. This is an excellent dramatization of the book. The voices are distinct and meaningful, and their presentation of the material is so good that I don't think I would have understood as much had I just read it. The music and sound effects enhance the story and make it come alive. The older English in the book can sometimes be difficult to overcome, but it doesn't seem so bad when you hear it spoken so effortlessly. My wife and I have enjoyed having this set.
