Considered by many to be Russia's greatest nineteenth-century philosopher, Vladimir Solovyov was a decisive figure in Russia's "Silver Age" (1880-1920). He is an even more intriguing figure in the religious world, given his path from Russian Orthodoxy to nihilism and subsequently Roman Catholicism, and finally back to Russian Orthodoxy.
The Philosophical Principles of Integral Knowledge is the earliest elaboration of the major ideas that would occupy Solovyov throughout his life. Completed when he was only twenty-four, this treatise outlines key concepts of his philosophical system---theosophy, theocracy, and theurgy---within the overarching framework of integral knowledge, which he understood as attainable in the "true philosophy" that connects humankind with the eternal kingdom of God. Taken as a whole, Solovyov's philosophy offers a powerful defense of religion in both mystical and logical terms.
Translator Valeria Z. Nollan skillfully brings out the nuances of Solovyov's rigorous exegesis and his self-confidence born of his extremely thorough studies. This English translation of The Philosophical Principles of Integral Knowledge is the first in any language.
