Overview
Sixteen church historians here examine Martin Luther in an uncommon way - not as Reformer or theologian but as pastor. Luther's work as parish pastor commanded much of his time and energy in Wittenberg.

After first introducing the pastoral Luther, including his theology of the cross, the chapters discuss Luther's preaching and use of language (including humor), investigatehis teaching ministry in depth, especially in light of the catechism, and explore his views on such things as the role of women, the Virgin Mary, and music. The book finally probes Luther's sentiments on monasticism and secular authority.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Nice collection of scholars' opinions and observations about Luther as pastor  May 2, 2009
This is a very helpful collection of articles from "Lutheran Quarterly", harvested from various previous issues of the Quarterly, a very fine independent Lutheran journal.

There is a nice summary introduction by Timothy Wengert, the volume's editor. The focus of the articles is on Luther as pastor. While I certainly have enjoyed the essays, it is not quite delivering on what the title would tend to imply. Some of the essays are a tad on the esoteric side.

I would recommend this book as a helpful collection of articles that shed further light on this always fascinating figure in the history of Western civilization, and for those of us who bear his name as our identity as Christians, the book is particularly of value.

It is always a bit sad though to realize while the academic study of Luther is of concern and interest to scholars, the actual, living teaching and preaching of Luther has been muted and distorted by the major Western liberal mainline Lutheran churches today which continue to stray from historic Lutheranism, on the one hand, and those Lutheran churches willing to head in the direction of American Evangelical Protestantism, on the other. Perhaps this book will be helpful in offering necessary course corrections.

The book is a glued paperback. My copy came with the UV coating peeling off from the cover. There is no index in the book, making study difficult.

I would hope that Lutheran Quarterly might consider placing all of its previous issues into a software platform, like Libronix from the LOGOS corporation, and thus making all the previous issues of this very fine journal much more accessible and useful for further study and use.
