Item Description...
At the dawn of a new millennium, twelve of the world's leading theologians and Vatican watchers ponder the future shape of the papacy. Pope John Paul II himself invited such reflections when, in his encyclical Ut unum sint, he said the church should search "for a manner of exercising the primacy that would be open to a new situation." In this light contributors to this volume explore a range of issues including the history and theology of papal primacy, infallibility, the magisterium, papal elections, the relationship of the papacy to a thoroughly indigenous church, and the role of the papacy in an ecumenical church of the future.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
After Pope Paul VI auctioned the papal tiara to feed the poor, in our post-Conciliar era, what role does the papacy play?

Our most influential American Catholic voices converge in this excellent collection of essays and reflections gathered by the great Catholic journalist and Irish barrister Gary MacEoin in one of the final efforts of his long and landmark life. Will we see democracy of the real Mystical Body with Jesus Christ as Head, or a theatrical and costly clinging to hollow trappings of the past less and less responsive to the true crisis of the People of God suffering as silent anawim under the political oppressions of our times? Why did less than one fifth of the expected Brazilians in our most populous and impoverished Catholic nation, recently appear to greet our Pope?

After a typically brilliant, delightful and insightful introduction by the editor, Gary MacEoin, the collection presents nearly every important Catholic voice reflecting upon the nature and function of our Papacy. Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister, author of so many important works of spirituality including The Rule of Benedict: Insights for the Ages (Crossroad Spiritual Legacy Series) and The Tent of Abraham: Stories of Hope and Peace for Jews, Christians, and Muslims, here carefully considers the role of Women in the Church and the New Pentecost in process. The great theologian Father Bernard Haring, author of The Law of Christ, Volume III; Moral Theology for Priests and Laity and several other influential works such as No Way Out?: Pastoral Care of the Divorced & Remarried and Shalom Peace the Sacrament of Reconc 2ND Edition here prayerfully shaers his hope for the future of the petrine ministry. Several other well known Catholic writers weigh in on our unique papacy, culminating with the respected religious writer Harvey Cox from a Protestant perspective and the future of the Papacy. Cox, a Baptist minister and professor at Harvard Divinity, is best known as author of The Secular City.

Highly recommended consideration and meta-analysis of our papacy, published nearly ten years ago by the great American Catholic publishing house Orbis Books at a moment when the papacy was at relative peace and thus open for reflection. An important collection of essays for any still thinking Catholic in this era of such superficial atrocities as Catholicism for Dummies, etc. In fact the title echoes the crucial writings of the late lamented Catholic writer Penny Lernoux and her People of God and her Cry of the People: United States Involvement in the Rise of Fascism, Torture, and Murder and the Persecution of the Catholic Church in Latin America.
Discovering a new paradigm for papal leadership!  Jul 20, 1999
Along with the prominent theologians who have contributed articles to this book, Editor Gary MacEoin has done a great favor to catholics and non-catholics alike who look for a new paradigm for the papacy in the next millenium. The contributors open the reader's mind to entirely new--and workable--approaches to papal ministry that are faithful to the call of the gospel and the tradition of the church. A must-read for anyone who is struggling to understand the future of the church and the place of the papacy in that future. When the next consistory of cardinals meets in Rome to elect another pope, papal candidates should all be required to read this before accepting the job!
Excellent collection of must-read papers.  Jun 2, 1999
I first read most of this book when it was serialized in National Catholic Reporter in Fall 1997. Gary MacEoin has done a splendid job in getting esteemed theologians and scholars like Joan Chittester, Alain Woodrow, Bernard Haring, Giancarlo Zizola, et al., to speak on the crisis of leadership within the Catholic Church. The contributors not only describe various problematic aspects of the Vatican, they suggest quite feasible solutions for turning things around. Every Catholic (and other interested students/scholars of religion) would do well to read this book. --Timothy Conway, Ph.D., author of *Women of Power and Grace: Nine Astonishing, Inspiring Luminaries of Our Time.*
