Item Description...
Overview
The Open Table introduces believers and nonbelievers to the person and deity of Christ in a new and refreshing way.

There are many people who argue God doesn't exist and many who argue God does. Still, millions know that, all arguments aside, what they feel in their souls is a need for God. To some, the idea of searching for God sounds as ridiculous as chasing a leprechaun to get his pot of gold. And yet few go looking for a leprechaun, while millions go on looking for God. At the heart of the Christian story-the story at the heart of The Open Table-is this basic idea: God shows up in the lives of people who search for Him.

The Open Table DVD uses state of the art video and the power of personal testimony to put God in front of anyone who has yet to meet Him. The Open Table Participant's Guide is for those whose interest is sparked and who want to dig deeper. In the unique and relevant voice of Don Miller, The Open Table introduces people to the person and deity of Christ, and everyone is invited to the table.

More About Miller Donald

Donald Miller Donald Miller (born August 12, 1971) is a best-selling American author and public speaker based in Portland, Oregon who focuses on Christian spirituality as "an explanation for beauty, meaning, and the human struggle".

At 21, Miller left his home in Pearland, Texas and went to Portland, Oregon, where he put down roots as he had planned when he started his road trip a few months before. Miller's first book, Prayer and the Art of Volkswagen Maintenance (Harvest House Publishers 2000), chronicled the cross-country road trip he took at age 21. It was printed with little fanfare, but it was republished more successfully in 2005 as Through Painted Deserts. During this time, Miller was the editor of an online Christian magazine called roadsearching.com and the owner of a small Portland-based publishing company called Coffee House Books, which published home schooling textbooks. Miller became a New York Times Bestselling Author when he published Blue Like Jazz in 2003. In 2004, Miller released Searching For God Knows What, which explores how the life of Jesus illustrates the human personality. In 2006, he added another book, To Own A Dragon, which offered Miller's reflections on growing up without a father. This book reflected an interest already present in Miller's life, as he founded The Mentoring Project, a non-profit that partners with local churches to mentor fatherless young men. Don's next book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, was released in late 2009. Later that year, Miller began production of All Things Converge http://www.allthingsconverge.com/ —a series of DVDs for small groups that feature Miller interviewing prominent Christian writers and theologians. The first three DVDs in the series were released in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Miller also serves as the Founding Director of The Burnside Writers Collective, a group of spiritual writers who contribute to an online magazine. Miller is recognized for his feelings that Christian faith should be a relationship, rather than a formula. He writes in Searching for God Knows What that too many Christians act like the Bible is a sort of math textbook, rather than a long story of God's involvement with people through friendships with Biblical figures like Adam, Abraham, and Moses. This emphasis on the Bible as a narrative has made his writings popular with many involved in the emerging church conversation. Miller does not consider himself a follower of the movement; he still recognizes the need of mankind to recognize its depravity so that it might better teach the concept of love.

On March 2, 2007, during an interview on the Relevant Magazine podcast, he revealed that he has been working on a screenplay with Steve Taylor. Miller delivered the first night's closing prayer at the 2008 Democratic National Convention on August 25, 2008. Miller serves on President Barack Obama's Task Force on Fatherhood and Healthy Families.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Thought it was something different  Oct 26, 2009
I had heard this explained as an open conversation with people on Christianity. I had thought this would include people who really didn't consider themselves Christian. After watching most of this, I found that just about everybody was not only a Christian but also a Pastor or someone who works at a Church.

This reminds me of people giving testimonials. If that is what you are looking for you would probably give this a 5. If you thought it was a sampling of what different people thought about Christianity then at best you would give this a 3.

As a sidenote many of the extras on my DVD got stuck in my sony DVD player. I would complain about it but I don't see myself watching this again so don't care a lot. I will chalk this up to a bad purchase. Usually I love Don Miller's books so I was really looking forward to a video.

Open Up Your Heart  Feb 14, 2009
The Open Table is Donald Miller's latest project, a creative departure from his bestselling books. The DVD is a collection of interviews with Miller's friends, including Rick McKinley and Robin Jones Gunn. It is simple and real, almost giving you the feeling that you're sitting around in someone's living room discussing God. And discuss God is what these people do.

The DVD is divided into five sections:

What Do You Think of When You Think of God?--This chapter deals with people's first impressions of God and Christians. You hear stories from Christians that are diverse and real.

Is Life What You Think It Ought to Be?--This chapter discusses the brokenness of our world and how God fits in our mess. The interviewees describe their experiences, which include refugee camps and child abuse.

Will God Break into Our Lives?--A chapter dealing with the changes that Jesus has made in their lives, and how their conversion came about.

Can I Know God?--In this chapter the interviewees describe their view of God since becoming Christians, and how they try to comprehend the nature of God.

How Do We Follow Jesus?--The last chapter is probably one of the most encouraging. It is the interviewees' stories of how they have tried to follow Jesus since they converted to Christianity. They describe some of the feelings and habits they have developed over the course of their lives.

This video is captivating. It is like being given a window to a person's soul. It is rare to see people so defenseless, letting their walls down to talk about God. But this project lets the interviewees do so with ease. What was most striking is the honesty of the people in the film. After watching it, you have the unmistakable feeling that you're not alone. There are other people struggling with the same questions, doubts, and failings that you have. And getting people to realize that is such a great help.

The kit is a little pricey at forty dollars, but it's worth it. This is great for discussion starters with groups. The DVD has extras that are pretty cool as well, such as thoughts on suffering and the Gospel of John. It also comes with a leader's guide. If you're looking for a thought-provoking group study, this is a great idea.
