The author and his aging father retrace his father's 1939 motercycle trip from Schenectady, New York, to San Francisco, California, as they discuss his father's World War II experiences and changes within America.

Publishers Description

Ride with a father and his son on an amazing journey through America's past.

In the summer of 1939, with the nation balanced between the Great Depression and the gathering winds of war, young Jack Newkirk set off on a rickety Harley to see both the New York and San Francisco World's Fairs. He had no way of knowing it was to e the autumn of his youth, and that his entire generation would soon be thrust into the most devastating conflict in history.

Seven decades later, author John J. Newkirk retraces this epic ride with his father, Jack, in a silent hope the old soldier will still be proud of the America he fought for. Each mile brings discovery as the author learns of his namesake, the heroic Squadron Leader of the legendar Flying Tigers, and of his father's life on the road and in the jungles of the South Pacific during World War II.

The result is quintessential Americana, a sweeping portrait of the grit, guts, ingenuity, and sacrifice that defined a nation, and a timely lesson from the Greatest Generation on how we can overcome our most pressing challenges and reclaim the American Dream.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Next time, more history and less right-wing politics.  Apr 26, 2010
I really enjoyed the parts of the book about the family history. The author obviously did a lot of research and the parts about his dad's ride and the war years were fascinating.
The parts about the author and his right-wing, political beliefs were a waste of my time. If I want that I can tune in to Fox News.
I'm a biker. I've been riding 55 years and have ridden across the US many times as well as riding in 15 foreign countries. Wearing patches from someone else's war and inventing a fake "biker's salute" don't make you a biker. If someone gave me his "salute" I'd have to return my own "one finger salute."
The Old Man and the Harley  Mar 31, 2010
I love vintage motorcycles and this book was mentioned on one of the bike blogs ,sounded interesting so I ordered a copy . I was not disapointed ! Though I ride a Honda the book shows that this dosen't matter we are all brothers on the road .My Grandfather was an engineer on the Nickle Plate during WWII and an Uncle served in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. The storys of children and husbands leaving thier loved ones to serve half way around the world to me were both heartbreaking and inspireing . I am sure today 's familys feel the same when thier sons and daughters are in Irac or Afganastan or elsewhere . The stories from the original trip accross the country to San Fran were especialy interesting as Young Jack learned to keep his VL running and enjoy the ride .The history of the Flying Tigers was also great and made me want to learn more .
Cannot Believe I wasted Money on this Book  Feb 27, 2010
There were certainly a lot of liberties taken with this story. I've read a lot of memoirs and a lot of non-fiction that reads like fiction, but the dialog in this story was laughable and presumptuous. While Part 1(the trip from New York to San Francisco) was fascinating, Parts 2 & 3 focused too deeply on the author's agenda and his internal struggles (in which he always makes himself out to be the better man following a number of "life lessons," how sweet).
I was looking for a good book about travel and motorcycles in Depression/WWII era U.S. An enormous disappointment.
Excellent reading  Jan 30, 2010
Very good reading. An excellent choice for motorcycle enthusiasts, but the non- motorcyclist will enjoy it as well. It gives a very good portrait of America during WWII.
An AWESOME chronicle  Dec 13, 2009
This book chronicles not only the journey of a WL 1930 Flathead across our great country in 1939, but also the feelings and adventures experienced along the way. Only a REAL biker will understand the emotions and people who make this story a true adventure.
