The Next Generation is Here ... Now  Mar 9, 2007
Andy is inspiring. This book will change how you find, coach, and mentor future leaders. Read it ... twice!
Powerful Punch  Aug 11, 2006

The last section is worth the price of the book. Actually, the first four sections were good, but not outstanding or unusual. They dealt with competence, courage, clarity, and coaching. I've read many leadership books and after awhile they begin to sound similar. The last chapter of this book makes a pointed statement, "Character determines the leader's legacy." Something about these last three chapters struck a chord with me. Andy writes from experience and with authority.
Milk Before The Steak, Please.  Aug 4, 2006
Andy does a fine job in breaking us in on the basics. I have always 'preached' that Christians should eat that meat of the Word with a glass of milk within reach. Let's not forget the causes for the effects, and sometimes we forget we do need that occational full glass of milk.

Andy's book is more for the immature- but growing Christian, although I enjoyed reading again things I had forgotten. We can never be reminded too often of the building blocks for good leadership. Infact, this book is great to teach a leadership class from.

Andy did some research here, and I have to applaud his efforts in his successful attempt to compile very useful and applicable information in an easy to read book. Good job, Andy!

This book will always remain in my 'reference library'.
Quick, Easy Read  Jun 22, 2006
This book is a quick, easy read. I've only given the book three stars because even though I enjoyed Stanley's comments, there was nothing really new to be found here. He says, as many other Christian writers have said, that leadership all boils down to godly character.

In true homeletical fashion, he actually mentions five "c's" of leadership: competence, courage, clarity, coaching and character. Still, as Stanley writes it is evident that godly character underlies the other four leadership attributes.

This book is a good, easy-to-read primer on Christian leadership. For something more detailed, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
Great food for thought while driving...  May 30, 2006
Rather than reading this book, I had the pleasure of listening to the audio CD of Andy Stanley's "The Next Generational Leader." In the midst of many hours on the road, I had no trouble staying awake to hear the simple yet impacting points in this book. Stanley takes a rather straightforward approach of describing the five big C's that his experience has identified for leadership by and to the next generation: competence, courage, clarity, coachability, character. Though nothing here is earthshattering or new, it was good perspective to hear.

Stanley pastors a large church in suburban Atlanta, so he writes from the specific frame of reference that such leadership has provided for him. Though I think that his intentions for this book are to provide leadership tips for all leaders, I suspect that his frequent references to pastoral ministry may make potential or growing leaders in the marketplace feel a bit detached. It seems possible that this book might not be the best fit for folks working outside the ministry of the church, though I am convinced that there are many nuggets of wisdom applicable in just about any leadership situation.

Given my current station in life as a relative newcomer to a church staff and a seminary student, I was captivated by the stories that Stanley told of the lessons that he has learned over his years of leading his church. Of particular interest to me was the suggestion that we would be well-served to identify the few things that we do really well and invest our time and energy in those directions, rather than allowing ourselves to be pulled in many directions and becoming ineffective as a result.

In short, I think that "The Next Generation Leader" is an accessible and useful addition to the stacks of available resources on leadership, especially for someone involved in or considering church ministry. I am glad that I listened to it and look forward to seeing the fruit that God produces as I implement some of Stanley's primary suggestions.
