Item Description...
This book will help readers discern truth from error and to withstand the pressure--even persecution--to conform to a relativistic culture. A new philosophy is invading our land. It states that "each person's beliefs, values, lifestyles, and truth claims are equal." How are we as Christians to respond? McDowell and Hostetler explain that Christ commands us to lovingly accept others without condemnation, but not to condone evil. A must-read in this relativistic age!

Redefining truth and morality - The New Tolerance   Dec 30, 2006

This is an excellent book on the subject of the 'New Tolerance',a cultural movement that is aggressively being promoted in news programs and in print today. The author communicates clearly what is happening, and how Christians can be prepared with a biblical response. Believers in Christ need to read this book and be aware of the current effects of this movement upon your children's education, the workplace, marriage & family life, and even your Church, and Pastors that either promote it or protect you from it. Entertainment and media is a most powerful source of indoctrination for the 'New Tolerance'.

Josh McDowell explains what 'Tolerance' means in today's postmodern culture, this he writes, is vastly different from the dictionary's definition, and he also writes how the 'new tolerance' veers from the biblical instruction of tolerance. The author clarifies the various definitions, and gives a thorough description, as well as a helpful overview comparison chart.

The 'New tolerance' seeks 'approval' and 'acceptance' of behavior. A person who accepts the new tolerance believes -- his behavior or lifestyle represents who the person is, therefore, to name any sort of behavior a sin is considered intolerant. The author explains the increased acceptance of the new tolerance is consistent with the loss of 'Ethical theism' in our culture. Ethical theism is the belief that - right and wrong are absolute and unchangeable, communicated to people from God through the bible. God's instructions are replaced, and knowledge and human accomplishment are elevated to a position of new moral standards and truth.
Excellent!  Jul 31, 2006
Excellent analysis on the spin the cultural elite have placed on the word tolerance. Absolutely essential for those with traditional beliefs particularly in understanding how the new tolerance is nothing short of an attack on all traditional belief systems.
This garbage goes beyond extreme fundamentalism...  Sep 27, 2005
In this book, Josh McDowell, attempts to assert to the reader that the ultimate correct society, a society he believes we once had in the "olden days," is still some how attainable to the fullest extent in modern culture. It's fine for one to believe such a thing and to appreciate traditional morals, but to instruct readers that we must not tolerate (despite the title) the behaviors of others if they conflict with the morals of Christian subculture is assinine. It is also ridiculous to present to anyone that as a Christian it is your sted-fast duty to stand in the way of others' free choice. Note that I used the word subculture. Christianity has become less of a religion or faith and more of a subculture of accepted standards than anything else. This book enforces the ideals that are holding back the Christian population of America by clutching the past instead of finding acceptable and ethical ways to move forward in our vastly changing society. Christians are more concerned with stopping abortion and homosexual marriages than they are with getting closer to the Lord, to Jesus, and bringing others to the Lord without persecuting them. Also note that it seems that in his desire to spread the Word Of God, he exclusively targets feminists, gays and lesbians, and even the Democrat party. In a more factual frame of mind, we all sin, everyday, whether it's a homosexual sexual encounter, or a little white lie. God sees all sin as sin, not certain sins as worse than others. Any sin is punishable by death under God's law (thus leading to why we need Christ as our savior). And, that no matter who we are or what sins we've committed, the only one who can save us from our sins is Jesus. There are not many verses attacking gay relationships compared to verses urging us not to lie, steal, covet, murder or commit adultery. Christians seem to be more and more entertained by attacking each other on sticky issues than working on their relationship with Christ. Abortion is a topic of modern subculture sustaining major disagreement. However, an example of opinion versus truth about abortion, is the direct issue of removing a fetus from a womb, when it becomes a human life, is not addressed in the Bible in any direct statement, and is therefore McDowell's opinion, and not the Word Of God. But who can weigh these things? Josh McDowell? I think not. "Judge not, lest ye be judged." When reading this book, take caution to notice what is God's word, and what is Josh McDowell's word.
McDowell is cracked  Aug 19, 2004
I would have to say reading this ridiculous book made me more angry and irrated then in recent memory. McDowell's concept of "new tolerance" is a joke. If tolerance has gone under some sort of transformation as he contends than I strongly believe it is definately for the better. McDowell attempts to convince that reader the tolerance of differance is the same as tolerance of evil.

For example lets take the situation at the beginning of the book: The relationship between the mother Monica and the daughter Sharry. Now conflict arose between the tow of them because Sherry wanted her boyfriend to stay in her room while they were over. Monica found this upsetting because she's a Christian. So, Sherry agreed that they would not sleep together while residing at her parents place. This did not satisfy the mother because she was now aware that the daughter and her boyfriend were having sex. The daughter did not insist that they be allowed to sleep together while staying at her parents place. She did not call her mother's beliefs archaic, or even criticese them at all. What she did do is inform the mother that she respected her views on not having sex befor marriage and therefore will not sleep with her boyfriend while they stay there but at the same she does not share those views and therefore will not stop sleeping with the boyfriend. Mcdowell does not agree with the manner in which the daughter handled the situation and utilizes this example explain his warped problem with tolerance, or "new tolerance" as he likes to call it. A reasonable individual would see that the daughter could not have handled the situation any better. Like or not just because Sherry is Monica's child she is still an individual and an adult with the ability and the right to make her own decisions on matters such as that. Last time I checked this is still a free society.

The incident involving Beverly Schnell; the woman who placed aad in the newspaper for "a mature Christian handyman." The government found that this ad was discriminatory. If you think about it carefully you will derive at the realization that it was discrimination. Schnell did not place this ad on a church bulleton booard or a church newsletter. She placed it in a newspaper. Newspapers are meant for the general public. She has no right to determine the religion of a potential tenant. it is the same as if she specified a desired race. For example if the the ad read; "a mature White handyman." Mcdowell tries to to twist this situation into some sort of example of hypocrisy and intolerance towards Christians.
Excellent introduction to this topic  Jun 16, 2004
This book is an excellent (but not the most in-depth) book addressing the reasons behind much of the moral decay we see in society today. I would recommend it to anyone who has not read up on this topic previously. The subject matter is presented in a logical, easy to read manner. The only problem I saw with the book is that it did not go as deeply as it could have. (For example, it did not go into the roots and organization of Secular Humanism).

As for some reviews saying this book promotes hate, this is simply not so. Christians are encourage to combat the new tolerance with something stronger: Christian love. A beautiful example used to illustrate this call to action was given in which a print shop was being depicted as bigots due to their refusal to print pro-homosexuality pamphlets. Did this Christian print shop respond with hate? No. The Christians met the protestors with love (and refreshments).
