Overview
"Why did I give advice to Eve instead of going directly to Adam? I knew I would never be able to stop the Creator's overall plan, but I thought I might really be able to frustrate it if I could screw up some relationships." So speaks Satan as The First Family Counselor in this new collection of Edwin Friedman's most popular essays, edited by his daughter, Shira Friedman Bogart. Friedman's signature wit and playfulness goes straight to the heart of human relationships from one generation to another. Throughout his life, Friedman eloquently applied the insights of family therapy to churches and synagogues, rectors and rabbis, politicians and teachers, and his humor, sense of paradox, and unique style of storytelling were trademarks of his teaching style. Edwin H. Friedman was an ordained rabbi and practicing family therapist. His ground-breaking volume, Generation to Generation, which exposed the connections between emotional processes at home and at work in religious, educational, therapeutic, and business systems, has become a modern classic.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
If a Friedman Fan, A Must Read  Sep 23, 2008
Edwin Friedman is one of my favorite mentors. He has gone on from this world, but his writings continue. His book "A Failure of Nerve" was published after his death as well as this title. In reading this book, it was deep in wisdom. There are lines that cause you to stop and seriously reflect because of the deep understanding of systems in this world. The book is written mostly about counseling, but there is a lot that is relevant to the church culture. It is not a easy read, but a rich one. But do not read this book unless you read "Generation to Generation" first, then read "Failure of Nerve" second and then move on to this title. Without the groundwork of understanding, this book will not make sense to a rookie in systems theory. Pretty much anything that Friedman writes is a great read. You will be a better leader after reading this book.

Classic Ed Friedman  Mar 23, 2008
I deeply appreciate Ed Friedman's daughter gathering up the most important of her father's remaining work and getting it out to a wider audience. These essays represent the best of his writings no longer in print or easily accessible. Ed Friedman represents an important variant of Bowen Theory, rigorously applying Murray Bowen's thinking to leadership functioning. Taken as a body, Ed Friedman's work is perhaps the most creative contribution of any 20th century writer on how leadership works (or doesn't). If one wishes to truly understand self in terms of families, organizations, religious groups, or politics, one must invariably reckon with Ed Friedman. Period.

The best of Friedman . . . almonst  Mar 16, 2008
This is a collection of various pieces by Ed Friedman, author of Generation to Generation. This book presents an insightful retrospective of "thinking in process" as Friedmans applies, illustrates, and explicates Bowen Family Systems theory (BFST) in a range of essays. In some of these essays he's at his outrageous best, and in others his capacity for genius shines. His chapter on BFST remains one of the best explications and interpretations of the theory.
