Item Description...
"Subtle, it's not. The Pilgrim's Progress is a frank depiction of the Christian life. Written by an imprisoned pastor almost 350 years ago, it still captures attention with its vivid depictions of the journey of an ordinary Christian. . ." The Pilgrim's Progress is arguably the most-read book in the English language after the Bible. This new, contemporary translation of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress retains the author's enchanting prose. Helpful annotations throughout invite a new generation of readers to join Christian and his companions, Faithful and Hopeful, as they travel from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. This is no pie-in-the-sky story. The Christian life is hard. There's no easy passage from our first experience of God's love to that final reward of entrance into heaven. There are obstacles and temptations at every turn. But, there is also help along the way, and the journey is gloriously worthwhile!

Publishers Description
The most famous allegory ever written, and the second-most read book in the English language (after the Bible), John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress has been enormously popular for 350 years. Now in a modernized rendering of Bunyan's enchanting prose and with elucidating annotations throughout, a whole generation of readers can join the character, Christian, and his companions, Faithful and Hopeful, as they travel from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Along the way they meet a host of unsavoury characters who attempt to waylay the pilgrims, but the hero presses on. For centuries, Christians of all backgrounds have found hope in this story of this man of faith. Now, this classic is accessible to a new generation of readers.

More About John Bunyan, Tony Jones & Robert J. Edmonson

John Bunyan John Bunyan (1628 1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose.

John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim' s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan' s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford.

In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

After his release, he continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War, Visions of Heaven and Hell, and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A welcome addition  Nov 26, 2007
The updating of the story of the Pilgrim's Progress is long overdue. The sidebar comments are entertaining and informative. This book should be read before tackling Bunyan's original.

I disagreed with comments that Bunyan was being "anti-semitic" in places. Bunyan disagreed with Judaism (and all religions besides his Protestantism), but his differences were theological, not racist.

Other classics of this era should be updated to modern language!
