pretty images, colombian folktale  May 6, 2008
This Colombian tale about a leaf-cutter is told with accompanying silhouette art that mimics what one would imagine as a leaf-cutter style.

The story starts out about a village of lazy people who move rather than clean up after themselves. A village child brings an old man who cuts monkey shapes from leaves, after which the monkeys come to life. The villagers decide to ask the leaf-cutter to get the monkeys to do chores for them. Over time the monkeys do more and more chores. Soon they are doing everything for the people, even complaining for them. In the end, the tale circles back to the boy who brought the man to the village. He leaves the village and, as he ages, he takes up leaf-cutting and creates the tale.

The thing I like best about this book is the illustration. They are dramatic, clever, and fun. The story offers some straight forward discussion points (chores, laziness), as well as the more esoteric (did the boy make up the story, was he the old man). As an adult reader, as a bonus, I would have liked a tidbit on the history of the tale and how it fits into Colombian culture.
