Item Description...
A former Secretary of State offers a provocative and very personal look at the role of religion in America's foreign policy, arguing that understanding the place and power of religion--and knowing how best to respond to it--is essential if America is to lead successfully around the world. 150,000 first printing.

Publishers Description

Does America, as George W. Bush has proclaimed, have a special mission, derived from God, to bring liberty and democracy to the world? How much influence does the Christian right have over U.S. foreign policy? And how should America deal with violent Islamist extremists?

Madeleine Albright, the former secretary of state and bestselling author of Madam Secretary, offers a thoughtful and often surprising look at the role of religion in shaping America’s approach to the world. Drawing upon her experiences while in office and her own deepest beliefs about morality, the United States, and the present state of world affairs, a woman noted for plain speaking offers her thoughts about the most controversial topics of our time.

In The Mighty and the Almighty, Madeleine Albright examines the profound impact of religion on America’s view of itself, the effect on U.S. policy of the rise of the Christian right, the Bush administration’s successes and failures in responding to 9/11, the challenges posed by the war in Iraq, and the importance of understanding Islam. She offers a balanced but, when necessary, devastating analysis of U.S. strategy and condemns those of all faiths who exploit religious fervor to create divisions or enhance their own power.

In this illuminating account, Albright argues that, to be effective, U.S. policy-makers must understand the power and place of religion in motivating others and in coloring how American actions are perceived. Defying the conventional wisdom, she suggests not only that religion and politics are inseparable, but that their partnership, when properly harnessed, can be a force for justice and peace.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A topic that needs addressing  Feb 9, 2007
I agree with the author that religion cannot be separated out from foreign policy, and I think she did a good job of illustrating this with her ideas and experiences. I wish more Americans had her knowledge and approach when they set out to tell the world what to do. I am all for separation of church and state, but not everyone shares this policy and diplomats must negotiate with whoever is involved in an issue.

I listened to this on an audio book. Her voice is not nice, but I preferred the fact that she read it herself -- it made it more relevant.
So Much Potential... But Failed To Come Through  Jan 28, 2007
I read this book because the premise of incorporating religion into foreign policy seemed to be a subject frought with potential and controversy. Sadly, I found that Ms. Albright did not develop the discussion to what it could (should?) have been. Many of her statements reflect PC garbage spit out by current and previous administrations rather than an insightful or accurrate understanding of the situation. She also seems to be distracted at times by defending the actions or positions of previous administrations, rather than pushing forward with the purported goals of the book.

Overall, I found the book to be a good review of history and a primer for the topic of religion's role in foreign policy and diplomacy, but largely lacking in the clear vision and lack of partisanship needed to actually get anywhere.
May I first state that I am very unhappy about my order for a book 2 days ago. Inadvertedly, I clicked ordering a second book i did not want. All of a sudden two books were being shipped, and I couold not figure out how to cancel and start all over - as a result, when I get the shipment, I will return unopened. and buy the book i want at a book store. The software did not help me - mayne its my fault but i tried three times to cancel right away and could not.

Madeline's writing was much more than I expected. I received a history lesson and stimulating ideas about the mix of politics, morality, God, and the impact on Iraq and the Middle East.

Thank you for asking me.
Excellent reading.........amazing woman  Jan 13, 2007
I had the chance to meet Madeleine Albright in person at a company function. She is not just another politician. She is an amazing woman and person, this lead me to buy and read this book. Her outlook on life is so realistic and simple. If we listened to half of her advice our world would be more peaceful. Great reading.........
Review of The Might and the Almighty  Jan 9, 2007
Albright offers insight and opinions on world affairs never before introduced in a public forum. Her theories are thought-provoking, and at the very least, worthy of consideration.
