The oldest child in a farming family, Anna feels fortunate to have received an education. She loved school, loved to learn, loved the excitement of discovery. But now, as she graduates at age sixteen, it looks like all that is over. Then Austin Barker comes to town to fill the pastorate for the summer months. The young seminarian is captured by Anna's intense desire to learn. The Measure of a Heart Review  Oct 31, 2005
Many times in life, one must face challenges through feelings of doubt and inadaquacy. Anna, a young and innocent farm girl, shares such feelings of never being enough. These emotions are aroused as Austin Barker, a passionate pastor fresh out of seminary, asks her to marry him. Anna is overwhelmed by the offer and feels she would only hinder the ministry as a pastor's wife. Once Anna agrees, she continues to struggle as the trials of ministry cause her to see herself as a failure. However, outside her feelings of limitation, Anna is known for her compassion and selfless love. Everyone else knows her worth, but Anna.
Janette Oke, author of the novel, has written many books displaying women who have overcome such trials as Anna has. Mrs. Oke was born into a farming family herself in the Canadian prarie. She is active in her local church and serves in various ministries.
I personally was able to relate to circumstances throughout the novel. I have experienced both the triumphs and hardships of ministry in being a pastor's daughter. There is a standard that one in ministry wishes to withhold, however, I never have felt burdened with failure to the degree as Anna had. Her story revealed the reality of faith on the field. She serves as an inspiration to me as she grows in the Lord through her struggles. This novel causes one to measure their own heart and grow as a believer.
Inspirational  Oct 3, 2004
The Measure Of A Heart, by Janette Oke is truly inspirational. She uses the character Anna Trent as an example to all Christians. She is introduced in the beginning of the book as a young, intelligent, six-teen year old farm girl. Throughout the book she grows into a wonderful Christian women, whom most readers would respect after finishing. Anna is innocent and selfless. When she decides to accept the role of being a minister's wife by marrying Austin Baker, she feels tremendously inadequate. Anna has a constant battle by questioning her good deeds, decisions, motherhood, and weather or not she does the title of minister's wife justice. She does the title more than justice! In fact, I wish that everyone could handle situations and treat others as she does. When conflicts arise not only does Anna have to deal with those circumstances, but also a second struggle follows, herself. She is extremely insecure. It is not until later in the book that she finally discovers that all her efforts are significant. I would highly recommend this book, because it offers a new perspective on life. Anna's selflessness makes the reader consider their priorities. Her first and foremost desire is to please God by doing her job sufficiently. I agree with Anna's desire, and this is probably the reason why I loved this book so much! Janette Oke is a talented author. I like the ideas and thoughts that she expresses through the context. After reading The Measure Of A Heart, I am excited to read more of her work!
Janette Oke...  Aug 8, 2002
Janette Oke in this book is wonderful. She places infront of me the examples I need to know. All of us need to know. most people in this world today would not be such wonderful examples. I do not know of many myself. Showing me the way to see the positive in the negative, I find that this is a very special book, indeed.
