More About Jay Edward Adams

Jay Edward Adams For over 40 years Dr. Jay Adams has been a modern day prophet calling God's people back from their dalliance with unbiblical psychological theory to a renewed confidence in the power of the Holy Spirit and the sufficiency of God's Word to equip the man of God to help his people with problems of living and relationship. Happily, many have heeded his call and over the years a movement, both deep and wide, has developed, consisting of pastors and other Christian workers who have been trained in and are practicing the kind of truly biblical counseling God intended for His people to receive.

Jay Edward Adams was born in Baltimore on January 30, 1929 and was born again about 15 years later in response to the reading of a New Testament that was given to him by a friend. He received his formal training at Reformed Episcopal Seminary (B.D.), Johns Hopkins University (A.B.), Pittsburgh-Xenia Seminary, Temple University School of Theology (M.ST.), and the University of Missouri (Ph.D.). He pastored churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, served as a denominational official, a professor at Westminster Theological Seminary, the director of the Doctoral program at Westminster Theological Seminary in California, and then as a church planting pastor in South Carolina. He was also the the founder of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation in Philadelphia, the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors, and Timeless Texts which now publishes his books.

In 1999 Dr. Adams retired from the pastorate of the church he had planted in South Carolina and has devoted his time to writing and lecturing. In the fall of 2001 the Redeemer Biblical Counseling Training Institute (RBCTI) was established at the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Moore, SC to provide a vehicle by which Dr. Adams could continue teaching.

When word got out that Dr. Adams was lecturing regularly again we began to get requests for tapes and inquiries about studying by extension. While many of the lectures Dr. Adams has given over the years are available from a variety of sources we have concluded that it would be a blessing to God's people if we could make a quality, structured, video taped course of study available for those who desire to be better equipped to minister the Word of God. Thus INS was born.

While health problems have restricted Dr. Adams' travel schedule, requiring him to slow down physically, he is still anxious to have an ongoing ministry, especially to pastors. He continues to write and though he has to sit behind a desk when he teaches, his lectures are still energetic, lively, and challenging. Those who have been enrolled at RBCTI this past year have given the Institute high marks and report it has been a great blessing in their lives and ministries.

Jay Edward Adams was born in 1929.

How can one review an item you hav'nt received?  Apr 10, 2007
An excellent work of high academic standard. I used it some years ago during my studies. Unfortunately it was not returned after someone borrowed it. My review applies only to the copy I had long ago.
However, after almost one month I hav'nt yet received the book.
I was informed that it was mailed via airmail some time ago. You surely can understand that I've lost my enthusiasm in supporting your services
and will in future attempt to source elsewhere.

Purpose...  Mar 30, 2004
Great and easy read. This short 56-paged book is not intended to be a "complete in-depth" look at baptism, but rather the intentions are to simply search and confirm the importance of the proper meaning and mode of baptism. Very good for readers who don't like lengthy\wordy books. Yes, there are quotes from other writers, and yes, you will definitely find scriptural references within this book as well. I would and always recommend this short and easy read to anyone questioning the meaning and mode of baptism (hence the title). If you've read this book and need more in-depth answers, then try `Baptism in Scripture and History', by Rowland S. Ward (ISBN: 0949670189); this too is a short book (80-paged).
Not Top Quality  Jun 4, 2002
Jay Edward Adams has the right heart when he "wrote" a book on the meaning and mode of baptism, but its not that good. The Book is pretty much nothing but quotes from other theologens and it seems that is all the book stand on. (In other words it seems more like Jay Edwards Adams believed more about what he was told and read in other books than from his own study of the subject.) Secondly, there are many holes in several arguments that are brought up in the book (some logical, some theological, and some historical.) For example: Adams argues that Christians could not immerse 3000+ inductees on pentacost because of the lack of available water (he does have a quotes that agree with him). Unfortunately this is so inaccurate that writers like John Murray when arguing against immersion wouldn't even talk about the subject.

This book is a typical study on the Calvinistic view of baptism, and contains some quotes of other writers that could be of use. But for a more thorough and accurate study on the the Calvinistic view of baptism I would highly recommend John Murray's Christian Baptism, or for baptism in general G. R. Beasly Murray.
