Item Description...
The Man Behind the Miracle is the life story of Father Alfred Boeddeker, humanitarian, theologian, poet and writer. Nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by former President Ronald Reagan, Father Alfred served his fellow men and women without regard for race, religion or station in life. In San Francisco, he founded the St. Anthony Dining Room, which has served 27 million meals to the hungry, and the St. Anthony Clinic, which has given free medical care for forty years. For his dedication to safe housing and other services for seniors, Father Alfred has been called "the greatest advocate for the elderly in America". St. Anthony Farm has provided drug and alcohol rehabilitation for more than nine thousand people. Father Alfred's generosity of spirit embraced the entire world, and his legacy of selfless devotion remains a beacon of hope that continues to light the world.

Franciscan Friar Father Feeds Millions  Mar 24, 2006
Alfred Boeddeker saw the equivalent of five loaves and two fishes multiplied many times over through the ministry and miracle of the St. Anthony Dining Room in San Francisco. This is the story of a man who brought dignity, meaning, and hope to hurting people in San Francisco. He faithfully followed his calling in a ministry of over 50 years.

The San Francisco Dining Room led to extensions of ministry world wide. The farm ministry that grew out of need to provide jobs and meaning to those ministered to through the dining room. One feature of the farm was the raising of hogs for meat for the San Francisco operation. I was reminded of the story of the prodigal returning home after a season of living with the hogs.

This is a story of lives turned around. It is a story of rebuilding and successes of those who returned to family and home. It is a story of men and women contributing anew to community and society. The author fills page after page with stories of miracles detailing the life of Alfred Boeddeker.

This is a story that should be read by Catholics, Protestants and Non Sectarians alike. It is a book that should be in High School and Public libraries. It should be required reading for the politician, the philanthropist, and the pauper. This is a highly motivating example of a man who lived with and fulfilled a high calling and purpose.
The Man Behind The Miracle  Mar 28, 2000
In "The Man Behind The Miracle" we read about an ordinary person who did extraordinary things. Father Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M. did what most good people only dream of doing. He fed the hungry and took care of the sick by founding the St. Anthony Dining Room and the St. Anthony Clinic. His whole life was dedicated to serving his fellow man and he enriched thousands of lives. All that he did was done with simplicity, respect and, above all, with humor. I recommend this book to those cynics who have lost faith with humanity, to those stout hearted souls who believe in the goodness of man and to young people who need to know that miracles can happen.
The Man Behind the Miracle/my uncle  Mar 21, 2000
Father Alfred was my Mother's big brother. When he planned some of his ventures, he would come to our house and talk about it, As I was growing up I was accustomed to lisening to the dreams, and then to see them come to life. I do believe that young people should read this book, because it tells them that they too can do great things in the world. Anyone can if they really want to and have enough Faith. He was a real inspiration to me and to my brothers and sisters, and we are grateful that he was our uncle.
The Man Who Made a Difference.  Mar 1, 2000
This story about Father Alfred gives a new insight to the fact that one man can make a difference. A difference to so many people, in so many places. The story gives a wonderful overview of his life and his dedication to the poor and needy of San Francisco and many other places in the world.

The author developed the story through a number of interviews of people that worked with Father Alfred and from personal recollections and family history. In this way, the story gives very real glimpses of how Father Alfred accomplished the feeding of millions, provided health care for the poor and needy, and how he helped others to begin similar programs.

It would be a good reading assignment for students in civics classes. It is easy reading with many short chapters dealing with specific interviews or events and happenings. Overall, it shows the real Man Behind the Miracle.

Wunder?  Feb 29, 2000
