More About Catholic Book Publishing

Catholic Book Publishing Co Catholic Book Publishing Corp. is proud of its unique history and long-standing commitment to the publication of timely and timeless Catholic resources. Orphaned through a tragic car accident and with only a fifth grade education, John V. Cavalero founded Catholic Book Publishing Co. on 12th Street in New York City in 1911. Vowing to keep the family together, John, the oldest of six children, took full ownership after buying out his partner’s widow, and gladly welcomed brothers George and Louis into the business following World War I.

Under their direction and hard work, Catholic Book Publishing prospered in the printing and binding industry, working primarily with religious orders. In 1937 the company relocated to two floors of a nine-story facility on West 17th Street, eventually expanding to be the building’s sole occupant. Coinciding with the new location, the company printed its first Missals for Sunday worship and continued to add family members, including John’s sons Howard in 1939 and John, Jr. in 1942. Work on the Douay-Rheims Bible began in 1945, culminating in the publishing of the first Catholic Bible printed in the United States in 1949. Howard Cavalero, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, was instrumental in developing and launching the St. Joseph Sunday Missal in 1950 and soon thereafter the Daily Missal. On its way to becoming the premier Catholic publisher with over 300 employees, the company added children’s books to its growing list of prayer books in 1955 and then the first Baltimore Catechism in 1961.

With the change to the vernacular mandated by Vatican II, most Catholic publishers lost their backlist and in 1969 Catholic Book voluntarily downsized, selling off its equipment and sadly laying off a large number of the staff. While working with them to find other employment, the Cavalero family and gifted staff including Anthony Buono, who was employed by the firm for over 50 years, developed liturgical books in the vernacular that are the preferred editions to the present day. Despite the uncertainty and constant changes in the Church during this time, the St. Joseph New American Bible and the complete Lectionary were released in 1970, followed by the first complete Sacramentary in 1974 and the four-volume Liturgy of the Hours in the following year. In 1978 the company launched its first full-color St. Joseph Picture Books for children that now number 100 in the series.

Catholic Book Publishing’s third generation, Howard, Robert, Joan and Fran Cavalero, with their dedicated staff continue its long tradition of providing high-quality, affordable, and popular Catholic reading material. Now headquartered in Totowa, New Jersey, Catholic Book acquired Resurrection Press, a trade publisher of contemporary spirituality, healing, and parish resources based in Mineola, NY, in March 2000, and in 2003 added the World Catholic Press imprint to the Catholic Book family. In addition to its renowned liturgical books, Bibles, prayer books, and classic perennial favorites such as The Imitation of Christ, Lives of the Saints, New Catholic Picture Bible, and Picture Book of Saints, they are always involved in developing new products. Recent years have produced the addition of a number of novelty formats for children, including the Golden Book series, Rattle Books, the Turn and Learn series, Tab Books, Clock Books, and a Piano Book. The number of children’s Bibles now available stands at 11, offering a variety of sizes, illustrations, and storytelling styles appealing to a wide range of age groups and tastes.

The company’s 100th anniversary year, 2011, was marked by the release of St. Joseph Editions of the New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE) in the spring and three editions of the new Roman Missal in the fall. In 2013, Catholic Book acquired The Regina Press, a 100 year old fourth generation Catholic publisher of children’s books and Bibles, Communion books and adult Prayer books. We deeply appreciate your ongoing trust and confidence in our products and look forward to meeting your needs for years to come.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Liturgy of the Hours Advent Vol. I  Jan 9, 2007
A beautiful way to pray in the Advent Season in preparation for the coming of the Christ Child. The heart, mind and spirit are drawn towards the the light, truth and love that we await in the birth the Christ Child. I would like to see this site carry all the Volumes to be individually sold as well. I began with the Christian Prayer Book about six years ago but I wanted more food to balance my day. When we pray the Liturgy of the Hours we enter into a communion of so many souls around the world including the Pope, monks, priests, brothers, nuns, third orders and laity who also pray faithfully it. It is a real treasure for the soul even if you can only pray it in the morning and evening. Don't be put off by trying to understand how to properly pray it. Just dive in and you will learn as you pray. Try it!
Liturgy of the Hours  Jan 3, 2007
These books are key prayer resources that aid me on my journey to be a servant of Jesus
A help to our prayer life  Aug 24, 2006
My wife and I had each been using a copy of the one volume book (but different editions) for several years hoping to some day expand our use to include the Office of Readings. We were greatly pleased to find the quality of the binding, cover, and print in these four volume sets. The goldleaf on the page edges gives a real sense of the value of this prayer style. While the price was about the same as from the publisher shipping from this site was an unbelievable $45.00 less.
Great prayer and great savings too!
Practicing the Presence of God  Apr 2, 2004
The Liturgy of the Hours is a great stepping stone to transforming our entire lives into prayer. The single volume Christian Prayer is a good starter. With the discipline of sticking with it daily, we tend to thirst for more. Then the four volume, more extensive set becomes a valuable purchase. The organization of its volumes into the various liturgical seasons better than the single book enhances our ability to focus on them.

Where can this lead? By dedicating each thing we think, say or do as a pray offering to God, we gradually grow into a state of constant prayer. It isn't necessary to be directly thinking about God as we pursue each task of our daily lives. Simply their dedication makes of them a prayer. The result is that we become consciously aware of God's presence on an ongoing basis. It's like when a person is standing behind us. They see everything we do, hear everything we say but we can't see them. Yet we KNOW they are there, and are aware of it at all times.

Once we are constantly mindful of God's presence, we allow Him to begin the purgative process, as St John of the Cross explains it. We think of hell as a 'firey furnace,' yet in the New Testament fire refers more often to God's love than anything else. In Hebrews and Wisdom 3, Scripture speaks of gold being purified in fire. Gold jewelry is an alloy with another metal, to enable crafters to shape it into a permanent, hardened state since gold is a soft, maleable metal. When we heat it up to 2500 degrees, though, it returns to its molten or liquid state, and the other metal (or 'impurity') easily separates from the gold, leaving only the pure, 24 carat gold.

Constant awareness of God's presence allows Him to begin to burn away our impurities by exposure to the fire of His perfect love. We feel the dissonance of everything that we think, say or do with His love when they fail to conform with that love. This spiritual discomfort becomes a gentle pressure, as we naturally begin to conform our lives to that fire of love. As we yield to His love and permit Him to transform our lives thus, we grow closer to entrance into perfect union with Him, which is essentially what heaven is. John of the Cross notes that this is what happens in Purgatory, but that we can make greater strides in that process during this life.

One by-product of this type of spiritual growth is that we acquire a keener sense of what God's will is. In the Last Supper discourse of John's Gospel, Jesus repeatedly says that whatever we ask for in His Father's name shall be done for us. St John qualifies that, though, in his first Letter by adding that what we ask of God must be in accordance with His will. As we conform our lives to His love, we increasingly feel more exactly what is in concert with it and what is not. Thus, we become more refined in terms of the prayers of petition that we ask of Him.

The Liturgy of the Hours is an excellent way to strive toward the prayer discipline that lets God draw us into that deeper spirituality, and ultimately into perfect union with Him for eternity.

get some help!  Feb 1, 2003
It takes a while to get the hang of using the Liturgy of the Hours, but it is well worth the effort. I highly recommend finding someone else who already prays the Hours to help you learn to navigate. The easiest way is to pray with them until you can find your way on your own. There would very likely be someone in your local Catholic parish who can help you.

The Liturgy of the Hours can be used for private prayer and meditation as well as for communal worship. Concentrating on the words, it is easy to lift one's heart to God. The translations of the Psalms and Canticles are beautiful.

The one-volume set has the music in the back of the book. The four-volume set assumes you already know the melody to the hymns. If you don't know the melody, you can read them as poems instead of singing them.
