Item Description...
Presents the first English translation of the life of the beloved saint known as the "Apostle of Rome" written by his disciple Antonio Gallonio soon after the saint's death.

Publishers Description
St. Philip Neri is one of the best-loved saints of all time. Known as the 'Apostle of Rome', he set in motion a great renewal of Christianity at the heart of the Church's capital city during the 1500's. St. Philip's foundation of the Oratory began by stimulating young laymen to conversion, prayer, and apostolic works, and through them gradually brought about a reform of the entire Church, at all levels of society. St. Philip inspired many through his words, his miracles and his spiritual gifts, which show many similarities with other great saints such as Padre Pio and St. John Vianney. This account of Philip's life, written by his disciple Antonio Gallonio soon after the saint's death, captures well his holy zeal for God's work in the face of a corrupt and decadent Rome; his great sense of humor, which he would often use to remind people of hidden spiritual realities; and the many extraordinary miracles and conversions wrought by St. Philip both during his lifetime and after his death. This is the first ever English translation of the affectionate biography, published originally in Latin in the Jubilee Year 1600. Unusually for the time, it was written in chronological order; it also bears the original footnotes by Gallonio, in which he refers to eyewitnesses and make comparisons with the lives of canonized saints, intending thereby to assit in the promotion of Philip's cause for elevation to the altars. Additonal notes and a comprehensive index make this a most interesting and useful book for devotees of St. Philip, as well as a very readable introduction to the saint for those who do not yet know him. This edition is beautifully illustrated with antique engravings of episodes from thebiography.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Great Saint  Jul 13, 2008
First published in 1600, just five years after St. Philip's death, this book contains a lot of detail that would otherwise have been lost. Written by one of Philip's disciples, it seems to read more like a report written for the canonization process than a biography.

The old style of writing is quite different from today's. At first I found it rather unusual that throughout the book the author refers to St. Philip as "holy father", but after realizing who he was referring to, I realized that is how they referred to St. Philip who was so loved by many. Also, many of the medical terms and conditions referred to are obsolete today.

St. Philip had many spiritual gifts much like Padre Pio including reading of hearts, bilocation, visions of the future, levitation, and healing the sick. He healed numerous people and even brought some back from death. The stories are all here in this book.

When the devil observed that Philip was winning so many souls for Christ, he determined to resist all his works. At the church of San Girolama there were two priests who had abandoned there religious orders. They relentless persecuted Philip . One day when he was celebrating Mass, Philip asked God during the Sacrifice: "Why is it, O good Jesus, that when I ask you so often, so earnestly, to give me the gift of patience, I am confronted with so many things that are liable to make me angry?" And when he had said this, he heard an inner voice say clearly: "Why do you ask me for patience, Philip? I will strengthen you with patience, but my wish is for you to strive as hard as you can to acquire it by means of these attacks." Of all the wonderful things that I read about St. Philip, this touched my heart the most because I have struggled my entire life with patience.

All things considered I would recommend this book, and would like to read more about St. Philip.
