Overview
What is our participation in the divine humanity? According to Bulgakov, humans "consist of an uncreated, divine spirit . . . and of a created soul and body." Prior to Christ's coming, humans do not have the power to realize in themselves the new spiritual birth that is not of flesh and blood, but of God. In explaining this important doctrine, Bulgakov begins by surveying the field of Christology with special reference to the divine humanity. He then considers the role of the Divine Sophia, examines the foundations of the Incarnation, explores the nature of Christ's divine consciousness, and ponders Christ's ministries while on Earth. A profound discussion of Christ's kenosis as a model for humanity rounds out this comprehensive and valuable study. The Lamb of God is one of the greatest works of Christology in the twentieth century and a crowning achievement in the examination of the theology of divine humanity.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Beyond all ordinary praise  Aug 2, 2009
This is the first volume in Sergius Bulgakov's trilogy on Divine-Humanity. He took this revolutionary concept from Russian religious philosophy and attempted to integrate it into Orthodox Trinitarian and Christological theology. The result is a breathtaking work of systematic theology that allows the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to shine out with stunning clarity.

Bulgakov begins with the unresolved dialectic contained in the Chalcedonian formula of the unity and separation between the divine and human natures in Christ. This undeveloped source of theological reflection yields its riches when Bulgakov introduces the concept of Sophia, the divine wisdom. This allows him to work out a balanced resolution to the Chalcedonian formula that sheds light on the person and work of Christ as seen in the gospels. Knotty theological problems such as the relationship between God and the world, eternity and time, the impassibility and love of God, the relationship between the church and the world, and the tension between realised and future eschatology, all fall out in a compelling synthesis, such that Bulgakov appears at times to have been overshadowed by a generous measure of Sophia himself!

This work led to his condemnation by the hierarchy of the Russian church, but I can only regard that as an error with political grounds rather than a reasoned theological verdict. The church will without doubt come to regard this as an authoritative exposition of orthodox Christology in the modern era.
