Looks at the four and a half century history of the Society of Jesus, argues that the Jesuits are becoming enemies of the papacy, and discusses the issues involved

Publishers Description
In "The Jesuits, " Malachi Martin reveals for the first time the harrowing behind-the-scenes story of the "new" worldwide Society of Jesus. The leaders and the dupes; the blood and the pathos; the politics, the betrayals and the humiliations; the unheard-of alliances and compromises. "The Jesuits" tells a true story of today that is already changing the face of all our tomorrows.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
An eye opener  Apr 23, 2008
I can not wait until the next update. This book has me searching the news for the next step in Jesuit history.
excellent book  Feb 3, 2008
This was a gripping account of a world we seldom see. Excellent book and very well written.
forget what you think you know  Aug 26, 2007
All of my life I've heard things about Malachai Martin. To hear my elders tell it he was either a mad man or a prophet. One day I decided to ignore all that and read the man's book and let him "speak" to me himself. First, I have to say that Martin was a talented and eloquent writer. He also must have possessed a sense of humour and was an enormously clever man. In the Jesuits he explains how the remarkable order went from being a dream in Ignatius's brilliant head to the mess it is today.

It's a sobering portrait and whether you believe that the Jesuits should be supressed again or that there really is hope for reform this book will chill you. For those who complain that JPII didn't do enough to discipline, The Jesuits shows that he was up against some very hard nuts. I don't know if I'll read any more of Martin's books and I have not made up my mind about Malachai Martin, the man or the priest but this is a very good book. Put aside what you think you know and give this book a chance.
Mad Monk Martin  Aug 10, 2007
The late Malachi Martin's admirable eloquence and independence inspired him to critise the Catholic Church from the inside and, in this volume, the Jesuits from the inside. What puzzles me here is his conservatism. What worries me is the idea that he may be right: the high intellectuals produced by the Jesuits perhaps threatened to undermine what Catholicism is; not what it might become. For example, Martin regrets that the talented Jesuits might have "made mincemeat" of their brother Teilhard de Chardin (who believed that evolution and Christ-centred spirituality, far from being exclusive, are interdependent.) It isn't easy to understand Teilhard's writings, but harder still to demolish his towering genius. It isn't easy to understand the point of this book, either, and probably not worth the effort.
The Jesuits  May 12, 2007
This book is a tremendous story of the way the Jesuit Order operates at this point in time. Father Malachy Martin is superlative.
