Reviews - What do our customers think?
Most unusual music you'll ever hear!  Feb 24, 2007
Kevin Max was 1/3 of an extremely famous Christian rap/hip-hop/rock group from the '80s up until the late '90s called "DC Talk." When the members decided to retire and go their seperate ways, the public was treated to the solo musical mastermind who is Kevin Max.

Mr. Max is an university-trained musician-- nothing cheesy or outlandish can ever be found in his albums. His religion is in integral part of who he is, but never demands we accept inferior professional work just because of it-- contrary to many minor-stream musicians. Kevin Max seriously should not be categorized as a minor-stream artist, as he's made appearances around the world at such places as Johnny Depp's club Viper Room.

In summary, every album of Kevin Max, particularly this one, holds the most unusual music you will ever hear. Broadly, one could describe it as "alternative" at times, or "rock" at other times, but this would not instill in the listener a true appreciation for the genuine creativity of Kevin Max. You must listen to the music for yourself: you will love it. An added, unexpected* bonus you will find in this work is a pleasantly relfective and sincere lyrical offering, woven so unobtrusively and casually into the music of the Imposter.

Treat yourself to 13* amazing tracks. Treat yourself to Kevin Max.

Rocks.  Jan 10, 2007
Kevin Smith,er, Max continues to grow and evolve into an ever deeper artist. Imagine this: when he was with DC Talk I used to think he was the least talented among the three. Instead, I just realize that the man is secure enough in himself that he doesn't have to "lord it over others" in order to be a "star."

In his last two solo albums, including this one, we see how much of a talented artist he is. In all his albums, in the background with DC Talk, or in the middle of the stage now, we saw what a fine human being he is.

Keep it up, Kevin.
The best album from Kevin Max to date...  Sep 12, 2006
Alright, let's get this straight off the bat: I am a huge fan of DC Talk, but unlike so many other fans, I do not expect the former members to produce carbon copies of Jesus Freak in their solo releases. And with Imposter, Kevin Max makes his distinct mark on the Christian music industry.

Kevin Max is among the very best when it comes to modern vocals, period. Perhaps this is why some of his previous releases (i.e. Stereotype Be) proved to be so lackluster: it seemed like the vocals took a backseat to the mysterious lyrics.

With Imposter, Kevin shows what he can do in a modern rock band setting. This is a breakthrough for him and is well worth your time and money.
inside i am just like you  Jun 2, 2006
Imposter is less Europop than Kevin's previous CDs because it has more of a rock influence and sound. His previous CDs were very strongly Europop and inspired by Morrissey, Bob Dylan, and U2. The main theme of the lyrics, which were partly influenced and inspired by Bob Dylan, is imperfection. Kevin covered When He Returns by Bob Dylan on this CD.
Kevin Max has a voice very similar to Bono's Irish-tenor range, and displays it in track 3, Sanctuary. And one song, track 9 Stay, is very Morrissey-like. It is melancholy, yet soulful.
The lyrics in each song are consistent with each other. The recurring theme on this CD is imperfection. The songs are about fear and doubt, as well as love and faith.
I like to listen to Kevin Max because of the distinct U2-ness--if that is a word at all--and all his inspirations he uses to create his own, unique work. The artists/groups he likes to listen to play an important role in helping Kevin shape his music into what it is. The Beatles, Morrissey, U2, The Smiths, Queen, dcTalk, David Bowie, and The Police are only a few of Kevin's influences that I love to listen to as well.
The style and sound in Imposter can be compared to Morrissey, Bob Dylan, U2's Bono, and Jeff Buckley. My second favorite CD by Kevin Max is Between the Fence and the Universe. It has the best song in the world on it: Irish Hymn.
Unbelievably Still Under the Radar  Jun 2, 2006
I am amazed at how Kevin Max remains under the cultural radar of so many people and radio stations. It may be that this music continues to defy easy catagorization, though I assert that avoiding being pigeon-holed is a good thing. The Imposteris very rich in lyrical content. Kevin Max has a gifted way of handling language in it's written form that continues beautifully without loss when he sings what he has written. Musically, however, The Imposter feels a bit stiffled, as if the album is searching for a sound it once heard but can not quite recall. It's not that the music is bad, it's just lacking something that borders on the "hard to explain". Lyrics are a solid "5" with music coming in at a "3". This is still a worthwhile buy for people who have yet to experience the sounds of Kevin Max, though I would start with "Stereotype B" if that's the case.
