Item Description...
John Bunyon was an English 17th Christian writer and preacher. He is best known for his allegory The Pilgrims Progress. Bunyan wrote The Holy War while being imprisoned for preaching without a license. This confinement lasted 12 years. The Holy War, made by King Shaddai upon Diabolus, for the regaining of the metropolis of the world; or, the losing and taking again of the town of Mansoul is a book of spiritual warfare. In this allegory an old tinker named Bedford is the central character. He is an independent Baptist. When telling the story of the symbolic battles Bunyan uses actual military tactics, which he may have learned from a soldier in Cromwell's army.

More About John Bunyan & Thelma Jenkins

John Bunyan John Bunyan (1628 1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose.

John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim' s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan' s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford.

In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

After his release, he continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War, Visions of Heaven and Hell, and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Oh boy, my children can't WAIT for the next chapter!  Nov 2, 2009
Do you read stories to your children at bedtime? Do you find it a challenge to obtain books that teach and cause your children to actually think about what they are being read? This book is a must for those families. So much opportunity to talk about what is going on in the story. The story takes place about a city (Mansoul) that was tricked into defying its Ruler (Shaddai) and receiving a new ruler (Diabolus) who only brings the city great harm. Shaddai sends His Son (Prince Emmanuel) to deliver them. Battles are fought. Certain personalities are defeated like the "Election Doubters" and discoveries are made as to how the bad guys (Lord Anger, Mr. Sedition, Mr. Heresy, Lord Lasciviousness, Lord Deceit and others) work their mischief. This is a great book! If you read one chapter a night to your children they will beg you to read a second one........"Please!" The author (John Bunyan) also wrote many other books. His most famous is the great "Pilgrim's Progress". I highly recommend it, as well.

God's peace to you.The Pilgrim's Progress (Oxford World's Classics)
excellent visual aid  Mar 29, 2008
This is an excellent book for those who are " visual people" for whom analogy gives insight into spritual reality.
While the author's story is invented - I'd say visionary - he maintains faithfulness to scriptural truth. This book helps a believer to see the world and the fall of man as it truly is - a military coup of Satan. It therefore helps the believer to uncover his works both to enslave mankind and to keep the believer from communion with Shaddai God.For the messianics out there it is pleasant to find the use of Shaddai and Emanuel
and the positive light given to the " law of Shaddai".
Strange words for the supposedly anti semitic church.

Classic Christianity  Apr 11, 2007
This is a must read for any age group. It conveys the truth of the christian faith in a clear and concise manner. This would be an excellent book for a youth group to use.
This is the modern english version  Oct 3, 2006
I just bought this edition, and was disapointed to learn that it is an updated, modern english edition of the original. I prefer to read books as they were first written, whenever possible.

From the brief comparisons I've made, it seems that this edition comes across somewhat less colorful than Bunyan's original, as the revisionist appears to have tried to simplify the vocabulary rather than merely updating it.
good read  Jul 17, 2006
I read this book for a class but I am glad to have read. This book is a great historical read. I found that it helped renew my defences as a christian.
