Outline Review"Long before we do anything explicitly religious at all, we have to do something about the fire that burns within us," writes Ronald Rolheiser. "What we do with that fire, how we channel it, is our spirituality." From the opening chapter, where Rolheiser eloquently compares the burning spiritual fire of Mother Teresa, Janice Joplin, and Princess Diana, readers will be fully engaged in a unique and altogether fascinating discussion of Christian spirituality.

As a regular columnist for the Catholic Herald, Rolheiser has clearly honed his writing skills. Like an eloquent marriage counselor, he deftly tries to reconcile the rift between contemporary spirituality and Christianity. For example, he points to the four pillars that support a healthy marriage of Christianity and spirituality, which are "Private prayer and private morality. Social justice. Mellowness of heart and spirit. Community as a constitutive element of true worship." Building upon these pillars, Rolheiser delves into the more challenging marital tensions with chapters such as "Christ as the Basis for Christian Spirituality" and a "Spirituality of Sexuality." This is an excellent book for any Christian who has longs to create a more holy and lasting spiritual union. --Gail Hudson

Product Description
Ronald Rolheiser makes sense of what is frequently a misunderstood word: spirituality. In posing the question "What is spirituality?" Father Rolheiser gets quickly to the heart of common difficulties with the subject, and shows through compelling anecdotes and personal examples how to channel that restlessness, that deep desire, into a healthy spirituality.

This book is for those searching to understand what Christian spirituality means and how to apply it to their own lives. Rolheiser explains the nonnegotiables--the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, the centrality of the Incarnation, the sustenance of the spiritual life--and how spirituality necessarily impacts every aspect of human experience. At the core of this readable, deeply revealing book is an explanation of God and the Church in a world that more often than not doubts the credibility of both.

Refreshing Take on Spirituality, Spiritual Disciplines, and Morality  Mar 18, 2008
Rolheiser begins by making a case for certain essential elements of a Christian spirituality. I didn't buy everything he said in this section, as some of his points were unsupported assertions that assumed a shared theological background, but I enjoyed his chapters on the roots of spirituality in the incarnation of Christ.

There's an excellent chapter on social justice, and despite Rolheiser's celibacy, he has a remarkably insightful and comprehensive perspective on human sexuality in the latter portion of the book. While reminiscent of the writings of Henri Nouwen, The Holy Longing strikes a balance with the average person that Nouwen - who, like Rolheiser, led a deeply contemplative life - never did for me.

The core of Rolheiser's argument is that spirituality is about channeling our desires, our passions, in life-giving ways. If these desires are either out of control or dampened entirely, inflation or depression - explosion or implosion - inevitably occurs, leading to a fractured self.

In an age when arguments for or against a particular practice on strictly moral grounds seem tired or antiquated, The Holy Longing masterfully links time-honored mores with an insightful analysis of the influence on the self that these practices have. It's not a book about morals or spiritual disciplines per se, but about nurturing a spiritual life that is truly life-giving.

If you've read dozens of books on spiritual disciplines, or are just getting started in the topic, The Holy Longing will be worth your time for its refreshing perspective and readable, almost meditative prose.
A Blessing  Jan 20, 2008
To read The Holy Longing is nothing less than a blessing in itself. Rolheiser is an exceptionally well-informed professional who takes care to express himself clearly to an audience of general readers. The book is catholic in its appeal, that is, inclusive and relevant to all types of pilgrims in all stages of personal development. Short, concise, and highly concentrated, I found that I was highlighting almost every other phrase.
A caveat: there is a hook in this book. Soon enough you realize, whoever you are and whatever your spiritual or political disposition, that this book is a call to personal transfiguration, and that your longing for holiness is a path longer and more demanding than you might previously have realized.
Not just for Catholics  Nov 16, 2007
I'm not fundamentalist but I am an evangelical and this book is the best book I've ever read on Christian Spirituality. You'll read it more than once. I've bought a bunch for my friends and now a number of Rolheiser's other books. This one is the best though.
Classical Catholicism.  Jul 16, 2007
This review offers an anecdotal story. I read this book when it was first published in 1999. After reading the first three chapters, I was excited that this new voice was following in a few sets of footprints of progressive Catholic Leaders like Richard Rohr, Matt Fox, and Diarmuid O'Murchi, to name a few.

Then I got to chapter four only to discover that this was just another book on spirituality in the genre of Catholic orthodoxy. Having left the Catholic Church many years before this book was published, I wrote the author via email to comment on his book. I was surprised when he got back to me. While I don't remember the entirety of the author's remarks, I do remember that he was positive and kind. One point that he made, however, is that he thought that I would not find a home in another tradition. Having been out of the Catholic Church now for over twenty years, I can state categorically that the Church holds absolutely no influence over my spiritual life or my relationship with the ineffable which we all serve.

It is interesting to note that the Catholic Church has morphed even further rightward with the election of Ratzinger as Pope. From a historical perspective, I suppose this event is just a passing cloud on the backdrop of history. All extreme ideologies lose the force of their impact with time, as truth will overcome in the end.

While I agree with the author's fundamental thesis concerning our relationship to God, one does not need the Catholic Church as an intermediary to accomplish that goal. Contrary to the Pope's recent public comments, the Catholic Church represents one religion among many. To assert that the Catholic Church is the "one true" Church is an insult to the vast majority of people on the planet engaging meaningful work on behalf of justice outside of this organization. These types of proclamations only divide people rather than bring them together in mutual respect and dignity. A lesson Mr. Ratzinger might learn to abide by, before his next irrelevant outburst.
Soal searching  May 13, 2007
Has me hooked on Rolheiser's take on what truly is inside each of us; an "energy and fire" that needs to be quenched. Fr. Rolheiser offers many options on how to contain, release and express this "fire within", and at the same time knowing that it is the Spirit of God working within you. Read the book, I read it twice so far. You will be amazed at how you think after reading it.
