Item Description...
The Hobo is a modern-day story which parallels the lives of thousands of men, teenagers, and many women and children, in the early part of the last century, as they traveled "free" on the rail system throughout the United States. Eric is born to and raised by his single mother in a house along the railroad track in the small community of Harriet, Wisconsin. At the age of 10, Eric begins two romances: one with the trains and the lifestyle of the hobos who sometimes traveled on them; and the other with Mary, a pretty young girl whose family moves into the next-door upstairs apartment. The Hobo is a story of a boy and his praying mother, the influence she has on her son, and how her prayers affect Eric in later life. It is also a story of the homeless and their plight, of forgiveness, of romance, and of a homeless hobo young man, whom God never forgot.

The Hobo  Oct 15, 2002
Roger Quam helps us understand the world of the Hobo as well as that of the weak and defenseless who live on the fringes of our society. He helps us see them as real people who have value. Roger's heroic character, Eric, reminds us of Roger himself. Eric (like Roger) is always willing to give someone another chance. He's willing to help a person in trouble even at high cost to himself. He's a worthy character to get to know (as is Roger!).
"The Hobo" is a great book! I enjoyed it thouroughly and found that i just couldn't put it down once i started to read it! I love that the character of Eric Anderson's mother, is modeled after my own grandma. There are many names and experiences that i caught as i have heard stories of over the years from Roger and his brother, my dad.
The author of this book, Roger (Butch) Quam, is my uncle! I am very proud of him in writing this book, what an accomplishment!!
This book brought tears to my eyes, made me laugh and made me think about life and how lucky i am...this book humbled me!
GREAT BOOK UNCLE BUTCH (the big brown, bad, bear) :)
Fact and Fiction, a Quality Work  Jun 25, 2002
THE HOBO is a fiction which offers a realistic look back on life in a small midwestern community beginning in the 1940's. It recounts the life experience of Eric Anderson who, after receiving loving and godly nurturing from his mother, is left at a young age without family to face life's challenges.

It has been my privilege to be a life long friend of the author. We grew up together and shared many experiences which were remembered while reading THE HOBO. The author has recounted many of his life's experiences and woven them into an exciting book which is difficult to put down until the last chapter is read.

Perhaps the greatest strength of this work is its clear presentation of the Gospel. Its author has, from his childhood, committed his life to honoring and serving God. The reader will also enjoy an exciting fictional story of an adventerous young man who finds meaning and love in this life.

Overcoming to make a difference  Jun 25, 2002
I enjoyed the written revisit from the type of stories my father use to tell me when he was growing up in the 30's in the rural midwest. He grew up on the family farm and the Great Northern had a rail line near the family farm. It was during the depression and everyone was struggling just to feed themselves and meet their obligations. There were no government safety nets, just good hardworking people, helping one another when it was right to do so. It was not uncommon to have a hobo come up the road hoping to get something to eat and drink before they moved on in search of whatever they were looking for. My grandmother would help them out with a meal, they would get a little rest, and then head back to the tracks waiting to hop the the next train. The Hobo reminded me of some of those stories with the twist that this Hobo was wanting to overcome and then make a difference in other peoples lives. I wish those same values were still alive today. Where "we" would take the responsibility for others in need and not just think that it was someone elses repsonsibility.
Holding Your Interest From Cover To Cover  Jun 25, 2002
I read the book in a very short period of time because the chapters were short enough to read even at short sittings and each chapter read increased my desire to read on.

There were a few (about three) errors in the book but they did not detract from the story or the books readability.
the book and that it was very informative to one who has ministered in gospel missions, but knew relatively little about the life of a hobo.

My husband and daughter also read the book and another is reading it now. When they are finished with it, we will donate it to our church library.
