Publishers Description

Olympic Gold Medal figure skater Scott Hamilton shares his eight secrets to finding happiness in the face of a life filled with challenges, difficulties, and career-canceling odds.

With never-been-told, behind-the-scenes stories from the skating world, personal challenges including testicular cancer and a brain tumor, as well as divine miracles, Olympic Gold Medal figure skater Scott Hamilton shares the secrets to his lifelong journey to find the silver (and gold) lining in the clouds of life. His life principles, fashioned into eight secrets that begin with the rote of learning to skate the figure 8, are the keys. Scott says, "Skating taught me how to be happy. I have always kept these eight as my own private, personal secrets that I practiced daily with repetition, focus, and discipline. Now I want to share them with the world."

"For the past twenty seven years Scott Hamilton has been a mentor and good friend. I've seen first hand the struggles he has had to endure and how he has continued to persevere with a confident attitude. He lives his life as a champion. Everyone needs the positive message of this greatly inspiring book."
-- Kristi Yamaguchi
Olympic Gold Medalist

Within the metaphors of his skating career, the wisdom in this book is not only very inspiring and easy to grasp, but surrounded by great story telling. I'm so glad he recorded it for the rest of us."

--Brad Paisley, Grammy Award-winning Artist

"It's like my bud Scott says..."you can't just skate through life and expect to be happy " So anyone choosing not to buy this book is choosing "not" to be happy. Shame on you."

Wonderful book  May 22, 2010
This is a wonderful, inspiring book. I suggest this book to anyone who has dealt with an illness or struggle and just can't seem to put it behind and get on with life.
A True Inspiration  Apr 8, 2010
Scott Hamilton is an Olympic Gold Metal winner, and amazing skater. We would all think he led an easy life but through the book we find out about all the challenges he overcame. We learn that we can count on life to Change which gives us hope to survive. A great quote from the book is , "All challenges are really just opportunities to learn more about yourself, to reach a greater understanding of self, of your mortality, and to be happy with that balance." This book is a fresh air that helps you to discover things you can apply to your life so it can be better.
The Great Eight - Good Advice But Lacks Proper Referrence  Oct 15, 2009
The Great Eight by Scott Hamilton took me a while to read. I would pick it up, read a few pages and put it down again. At first this seemed like a challenge but now that I'm done I am grateful for the length of time I took to read this book. I feel that I was able to go deeper into the material and sit longer in those spaces of new ideas this way and, hopefully, those spaces are now more familiar to me. I found parts of the book repetitive, but then again this wasn't new material for me just a new presentation. If changing your life by changing how you interact and react to your life had been new concepts for me I think the repetitive would have been very helpful.
The overall gist of Scott's message was that being positive is a very doable and powerful way of existing. Things will happen in our lives - in everyone's lives - we can not stop changes, but by being positive and using his "Great Eight" techniques/concepts we will live more fruitful, happy, and fulfilled lives.
I found Biblical truth here. However, it was because I read the Bible daily and not because there were a lot of direction correlations drawn between what was being and what is written in God's word. I wish there would have been more explicit correlations made - they would have been helpful for many readers. Every now and then the author would phrase things in such a way as to begin sounding much more New Age than Biblically based and that, coupled w/ the lack of Biblical reference, makes me nervous. People need sound leadership in these times - so many get caught up in New Age ideas and ideals - this book could conceivably be read by someone who is lost in New Age concepts and help them stay lost instead of helping them find their way to salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. That was my one big issue with this book and why I will only selectively recommend this book to others.
Great book!  Oct 9, 2009
This is a very inspirational book and really makes a person look at the good side of life even when things are not going so great. I've been a "Scotty" fan for many years, but you don't have to be a fan to enjoy this book!
Skating Your Way to Happiness  Sep 7, 2009
Scott Hamilton, one of the greatest male figure skaters of our generation, has written a book that documents his pursuits of life, struggle, triumph, and dreams. In The Great Eight, you find yourself finding out the magic formula for how Scott maintains his happy persona.

He offers eight great pieces of advice to help anyone pursue a life of happiness. Happiness is a state of mind - one that has brought him full circle in his pursuits of excellence. He battled on the ice, off the ice, and learned how to adapt and grow with the help of key mentors in his life.

Scott states "Happiness is a fundamental, spiritual commitment to dedicating yourself to the things in life that bring you the most joy. That is why a lot of relationships fail: people forget they are committed" (p.18). He details his commitment to his marriage, his life-long passion of skating (which almost did not happen), the sacrifice that his parents and mentors made on his behalf, the triumph over his cancer, and most importantly his passion for his Lord. Scott's happiness is rooted in every experience he has gone through and this book is a living, breathing testament to his success and commitment, it is a must read.
