Great "how to" - Not great recipes and I felt "Duped!"  Jul 30, 2008
This book has some great ideas on the "How To" start and maintain a supper swap. On the technical matters, I would give this book a 7 out of 10.

I found it incredibly wordy and redundant. I was also surprised to find that it has an extremely religious/evangelical bend to it - quoting scriptures and focusing on prayer to help solve problems that arise. I, personally, am not religious - so I was very surprised to find just how much religious content there was in the book - without much of any mention on either of the covers. I don't know this author, and the title, without having time to really check out the inside before buying, led me to purchase the book on the spot. Nowhere on the front cover does it mention anything about it being religiously based. If you read the entire copy on the back cover of the book - it does have a small mention of "Woven with biblical wisdom..." I felt a little "duped" actually - and considering that the majority of American's do not ascribe to a "deity based" religion - I was a little surprised at the title "The Great American Supper Swap," once I realized it was heavily bible based. Perhaps Trish and her publishers should consider re-titling the book "The Great Supper Swap - Solving the Busy Christian Woman's Dinnertime Dilemma."

In any event...if you can get beyond the bible quotes and ministry lessons, there is some good basic information about how to start a supper club and what types of equipment you would need.

I found the recipes to be disgusting and heavily lacking in nutritional quality. Many of the the main meals contain creamed soups (heaving in sodium, high in calories), velveeta cheese (why do they call this cheese to begin with), frozen (not fresh) vegetables, processed and packaged, canned breads - and one meal called for crushed up Doritos ??? HUH?? There is absolutely nothing healthy about any of this food. One recipe in particular calls for 1/2 cup of butter, 16 oz of sour cream (not light, not low fat, but regular), 8 oz of cream cheese and then another 8-10 oz of shredded cheddar cheese! And she suggests that a "heaping helping" of this side dish is comforting! If I ate these meals 5 nights a week, I would be 500lbs by the end of the year and I can only imagine what my sodium levels and blood pressure levels would be. One of her soup recipes calls for 2lbs of Velveeta Cheese!! Ack!! And for dessert, you can have something made with instant jello, or even better yet - Kool-Aid (nothing but artificial colors, flavors and sugar).

I'm sorry Trish and fans of Trish - I can't get behind something that isn't healthy for me or my family. Again, I like the idea of the supper swap - but it doesn't take much more time or effort (or expense for that matter) to make your meals with fresh, unprocessed food that doesn't involve preservatives and artificial ingredients.

Recipes I would never make  Jun 3, 2008
The book did a good job of explaining how to set up a group including what to do when someone drops out. The information on what kind of pans to use and how to consolidate deliveries was particularly useful. However, most recipes in this book include a copious amount of at least one of these: canned creamed soup, Velveeta cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, or creamed cheese. I was looking for original, healthy recipes made with fresh ingredients that would be easy to make in quantity to share.
The book contains tons of information about why we should be eating dinner together as a family, complete with statistics from research studies, but if you're considering this book, you've probably already decided that having dinner together is important. The book is also extremely heavy on evangelical Christian perspective--OK with me, but definitely not what I was expecting.
Great for someone interested in starting a supper swap  Nov 5, 2007
I had already been doing a supper swap for over a year when I purchased this book. I thought it would give me a lot of recipes to add to what I already had. It did give me a few recipes, but the book was more about Why you should start a supper swap and How to do it. I think I was just a little misled.
What a Great Idea for Busy Moms  Jul 25, 2007
What a great idea for busy moms! Trish Berg tells us how to serve great dinners to our family each evening without having to prepare them ourselves...except for one meal a week.

And if the ease of doing it isn't incentive enough, Trish encourages us to follow the family-dinner tradition by recapping some of the current problems children face in our culture and shows us how something as simple as family dinners can help alleviate the problems. Through statistics, Berg shows that children who eat dinner with their families are less likely to smoke, drink, and use drugs, and are more likely to have positive relationships with parents and peers as well as being more emotionally content and earning better grades. Although these positives may not all be owed to the family dinner alone, Trish's statistics show how family dinners are an important part of a positively functioning family that produces healthy children.

The best thing about The Great American Supper Swap, however, is the author's description of how supper swapping works, including how to set up a supper swapping group from start to finish with all the little details answered to keep things running smoothly. She even includes some delicious looking recipes. She makes it look so easy. And my guess is that if you do it her way, it is.
