Item Description...
Overview
Dr. Sim demonstrates that the Matthean community should be located in Antioch in the late first century, and he argues that the history of this community can only be understood in the context of the factionalism of the early Christian movement. He identifies two distinctive and opposing Christian perspectives: the first represented by the Jerusalem church and the Matthean community, which maintained that the Christian message must be preached within the context of Judaism; and the second represented by Paul and the Pauline communities, in which Christians were not expected to observe the Jewish law.

Publishers Description
In this meticulously researched and compelling study, David Sim reconstructs the social setting of the Matthean community at the time the Gospel was written and traces its full history.Dr Sim argues that the Matthean community should be located in Antioch towards the latter part of the first century. He acknowledges the dispute within the early Christian movement and its importance. He defines more accurately the distinctive perspectives of the two streams of thought and their respective relationships to Judaism. A new and important work in Matthean studies.>

A meticulously researched study  Jun 3, 2000
Sim's book is one of the most important books on Matthean studies and Christian Judaism since J. D. Dun's Unity and Diversity in the New Testament. The chapter on Pauline Christianity and the Matthean Community is significantly important, for Sim argues that Matthew is anti-Pauline, thus Paul's Torah-free Christianity is anathema to the Matthean Community. Furthermore, Matthew's Gospel has a number of anti-Gentile statements, which Sim concludes is a result of the Matthean Community being surrounded by a hostel Gentile environment. Gentiles wanting to join the Matthean Community first had to convert to Judaism and then undergo Nazarene indoctrination and ritualism. In short, Sim argues that the Matthean Community is totally committed to Judaism as interpreted by Jesus from Nazareth. This book raises a number of important questions, which cannot be ignored to do so is at Christianity's peril.

Why we love darling Uncle David's book.  Dec 29, 1999
The Gospel of Matthew and Christian Judaism: The History and Social Setting of the Matthean Community is a truly inspiring and amazing book for readers of all ages. We read a chapter every night before going to bed and find it a delight. Hannah, Bridget, Emily and Liz Sim truly love and agree with all of Dr Sim's discussions. Dr Sim raises a lot of interesting and plausable topics that should be taught in every school. In Dr Sim's next book look closely in the acknowledgements for our names. That's Hannah, Bridget, Emily and Liz, David's neices. We'd just like to finish by saying we love the book and Hannah kisses it every night.
