Item Description...
The God-Hungry Imagination acknowledges the role of the imagination in spiritual formation, essentially developing a theology of the imagination for postmodern youth ministry, in which story and storytelling become vital ways the next generation experiences the gospel. It explores why storytelling has such power to incarnate the meaning, not just the truth, of the gospel in ways the imagination can grasp. Understanding the elements of story and the imagination's role in spiritual formation can transform how pastors and youth workers speak and write; not just by throwing the occasional illustration or movie clip into the message, but by seeing themselves primarily as instruments who share or facilitate the sharing of faith-stories, and who invite others to be part of God's great Story. The book closes with practical examples of how storytelling can become the heart of worship, service, discipleship and event-programming in postmodern youth ministry.

Mixed Review  Apr 17, 2009
I appreciated the usage of other fictional literature to identify with storying. I was able to grab some tid bits about the impact that storying can make. Being a postmoder/emerging church-ish book, I appreciated her theology. It was refreshing and positive.

However, I eventually skimmed the pages looking for the info I desired. There was too much emerging church vs. modern church in the pages. I didn't get a sense of unity in God's kingdom, but a sense that she has been burned in the past. It seemed like EVERY modern church was guilty. After a while, it felt like the typical "everything about a modern church is wrong and we have the correct way" type of book. I'm all for righting the wrongs and fixing what's broken, but her remarks have too much friction. Almost seemed a bit elitist and rebellious.

I put the book down a bit disappointed. If she would have left out the many, and sometimes subtle, stabs at modern church, I would have probably appreciated the book more.
Specifically Better and Worse  Jan 5, 2009
Sarah Arthur is a literature geek. She affirms this herself, multiple times, throughout "God-Hungry Imagination." For better and worse, this is the lens through which she writes.

For Better:
- There just is something refreshing about hearing from somebody who is passionate about something. Arthur has a deep love for story and by the end of her book, it will inevitably rub off on you.
- There are a number of really specific examples and exercises that Arthur cites. These are generally very good ideas and even if they don't translate perfectly into your context, they go a long way toward getting the creative juices flowing.
- In the midst of the voices of hundreds of church practitioners who are suggesting that we ditch everything and start from scratch, Arthur takes what seems to be a more balanced approach - arguing we must reclaim the story we have found ourselves in for the past thousands of years.

For Worse:
- In one of the last chapters, Arthur finally admits that her ideas apply specifically to kids who are traditional, have heard it all, and have been raised in the church. If you're dealing with kids that are looking for help overcoming drug addiction, kids who have abusive care givers, etc, this book won't do you much good.
- Arthur writes specifically within her Methodist tradition. Large portions of the book are dedicated to things like "confirmation classes" and being a part of a congregation who sticks to liturgy as dictated by the Church calendar. Although these things may be translatable to other congregations/denominations, you get the impression while reading that this may not apply to your setting.

In all, the emphasis and passion for story is invigorating, you will leave the book with your mind racing about how you can be more prophetic in your approach toward Youth Ministry. Nonetheless, Arthur's push toward basing an entire ministry around story seems a little stretched, especially when dealing with some of the tougher issues your students deal with.

I give it 3.5 stars out of 5.
