The Most Useful One-Volume Stystematic Theology of Our Time  Apr 9, 2008
At this point I am unable to write much of a review of the contents of this title. For now I will simply limit myself to the assertion that this is hands down the best one-volume systematic I have ever come into contact with. Cottrell's teachings here on soteriology are especially to be commended. In many ways, to me, he is the last Arminian. Unlike Roger E Olson and the Free Will Baptist theologians (eg, Stephen Ashby, F Leroy Forlines, Robert Picirilli, J Matthew Pinson) he denies the entire TULIP as fallacious (that includes the 'T') and sets aside the erroneous concept of Christ's 'active' righteousness somehow being imputed to believers for their justification (something many, if not most, conservative Arminians are unwilling to do). If you do not have this volume, I cannot recommend 'The Faith Once for All' by Jack W Cottrell more highly. I have never used a single theological text with more frequency than this one.
Best ever  Mar 11, 2008
Dr. Cottrell's Faith Once For All has helped me more than any other book I have read. Deep, clear, concise, he makes understanding the Bible easy and common sense. My recent purchase was a gift, I've already read the book (4 plus times) and use it constantly as a reference, it doesn't go on the shelf, it's constantly close at hand. Dr. Cottrell is one of my favorite authors. Would recommend anything he has written.

excellent conservative systematic theology  Feb 3, 2008
Besides its biblical accuracy, the strength of this book lies in its succinct and highly readable presentation. I went through this book in one year as part of a weekly men's reading group. The chapters on original sin and predestination are nice summaries from an Arminian perspective, but are, of course, just the tip of the iceberg. I also greatly benefited from the chapters on interpreting biblical prophecy and views of the end times. Cottrell takes an amillenial perspective, while providing a lucid summary and critique of other views. This book is an indispensable reference that I refer to often.

If you want a more in-depth treatment of Free Will and Calvinism, Cottrell has an excellent three-part work titled "What the Bible Says About God the"... (1) Creator (2) Ruler (3) Redeemer. The second work in particular addresses religious determinism (including Calvinism) in detail. Cottrell also has a magnificent commentary on Romans that is written from an Arminian perspective (something rather difficult to find these days).

Not the Worst, Not the Best  May 28, 2007
I have read Cottrell's to try and find answers to some of my most theological questions. I have always wanted to know the difference between Calvinism and other Christian world views. What I did not expect to find was the loose theology and some of the blasphemous statements in the book regarding the Holy Spirit.
The loose theology comes in the explanations of some verses or sections of scripture. I felt as though Cottrell was making it up as he went along. Granted, some points took the reader into an explanation of the Greek words as translated into English. The problem is with the ignoring of other verses that counter Cottrell's points. Sometimes Cottrell just writes off other sections of scripture like they do not hold any importance because they do not support his particular view on a subject.
While I strongly disprove of his views on some subjects (baptism especially; Cottrell seems to believe baptism is necessary for salvation unless God says otherwise. Seems rather inconstant) his views on the Holy Spirit are way off the mark, and dangerous. So dangerous I fear he may be leading people to hell. In regarding gifts of the spirit as practiced today, Cottrell states in his book:

"It is my conviction that their origin is demonic, paralleling similar phenomena in occult circles. They are the result of satanic deception."

I am not saying all things in the church are of God or suggesting we do not "test the spirits." But to make a blanket statement that miraculous happenings that are beneficial may be from Satan is worrisome. If these things are from the Holy Spirit, than Cottrell has just committed blasphemy of the worst kind. Because of this chapter, I am hesitant to recommend this book. Its a shame, it is does have some good things to say, but there is just too much garbage in a few spots. I would read it with caution, and deffinatly not take the book as my final authority on matters of scripture.
