Item Description...
Rising romance novelist Jamie Carie's second book, The Duchess and the Dragon, tells the epic story of two unlikely soulmates who live worlds apart but soon meet and turn each other's world upside down. Drake Weston, Duke of Northumberland, is accustomed to a life of royalty until a tragic mistake followed by murderous rage results in his darkening character and sudden flee from England. With a hoarde of money on which to survive, Drake hops a ship of indentured servants to America but is duly robbed and taken ill by the merciless sea voyage. In Pennsylvania, Serena Winter is a humble, devoted Quaker on a mission of mercy, ready to tend the sick people aboard a ship that has just arrived from England. Taken by Drake's air of dark mystery after he begins to serve as an apprentice to her silversmith father, Serena falls in love and is excommunicated by her fellow believers when she accepts a non-Quaker's marriage proposal. Not knowing Drake's history, Serena is later shocked to discover her new status as a duchess. What follows are hard truths and softening hearts, romance triangles, webs of deceit, and ultimately, the power of grace, love, and passion.

Publishers Description
Drake Weston, Duke of Northumberland, is heir to wealth, prestige, and power. But when hisrage pushes him to a tragic mistake, he must leave everything behind. Not just his home, but England herself. Cloaked in a false identity, Drake slips aboard a ship bearing indentured servants to America. Serena Winter lives out her Quaker beliefs tending the sick who arrive on ships in the Philadelphia harbor. But never before has she seen such squalor and misery as she finds on the latest ship from England. Nor has she ever met such a one as the half-conscious man with the penetrating eyes and arrogant demeanor. Though she saves his life, even taking him into her family home, there is little gratitude or humility in this man. And yet Serena is certain that beneath the brash exterior is a heart in search of peace. Against the rich backdrop of Regency-era England and a young America, two passionate, seeking hearts find in each other the strength to face hard truths-- and confront an insidious web of deceit that may destroy all they hold dear.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Absurd, Illogical and Contrived  Nov 6, 2008
The whole book I continued saying to myself, "I can't believe this is happening. This is ridiculous. Who would ever do this?" The story line in this book was so absurd and ridiculous that the only reason I finished the book was to find out if the author managed to throw in anymore twists that made absolutely no sense. The two main characters aren't believable. They act in ways that are illogical and so contrived to fit the author's plot line that nothing seemed natural. Both characters are introduced and then proceed to act in ways that completely contradict their original personalities, with very thin/weak plot vehicles as reasoning. But even their original personalities are ludicrous, particularly Drake's. Bottom line is that I can't believe that I wasted my time on this piece of garbage.
Sophomore Release Shines!  Oct 27, 2008
What will it take to tame a dragon? And what will become of a Quaker turned Duchess when she learns of her husband's deceit? This dragon knew no other way. He feels his only way out is deception. But some time in the king's tower might prove the sort of motivation he needs to reconsider, that and his newly embraced understanding of God and His ways. But can his wife hang on, knowing her future and that of their baby is at stake?

Jamie's sophomore offering is just as intriguing and engaging as "Snow Angel." Again, readers will notice this is not an inside-the-box sort of inspirational fiction. She took risks, especially where passion is concerned. Yet, boundaries are kept, making this novel a true work of Christian fiction. Yes, she pushes the envelope again, but not without the witness of God's work in the lives of some very real characters. Though they face realistic situations of temptation and fear, mistakes and their consequences, they also grow to understand where God is in all the turmoil. The genuineness of Jamie's faith is always apparent in her fiction.

I highly recommend Jamie's novels and look forward to "Wind Dancer," her winter release.
So contrived!  Sep 4, 2008
This book was so bad I couldn't finish it. Wish I could get my money refunded!
Hard to put down romantic historical  Jun 4, 2008

Jamie Carie knows how to pull a reader in to a story. The inheritance scandal and Drake flight's for his life and near-tragic sea journey really grabs you. That was all great stuff, if not too descriptive. Some details even turned my stomach. Then the romance begins, and my first thought was that it reminded me of a Harlequin historical romance. I haven't read them in years, but the attraction Serena feels toward this obviously sick man doesn't make a lot of sense because you know he had to look skinny and bedraggled, but I suppose the pull she felt was reminiscent of Florence Nightingale syndrome. I would think her desire would be more from pity that actually having the hots for him. That is just a minor issue. At any rate, the attraction between them sizzled and that was pretty exciting stuff.

I was amazed at how much was implied that goes above and beyond what you find in most inspirational historicals, but it was enjoyable and refreshing to read. Like many woman, Serena felt a strong pull toward the dangerous guy and felt mere friendship for the safe one. The fear, excitement, pangs of regret, renewed hope, and roller coaster of emotion that played out in this story all made sense to me. I especially enjoyed the faith portion and the change exhibited in Drake's heart over time. He truly was not the same man he was before. Isn't that just how it is when God uses trials and hardship to soften us and draw us close to His heart?

Overall, I'd say this book was a dynamic read. It was hard to put down and I found the story and the setting incredibly engaging, plus the emotional and physical interplay between the hero and heroine was breathtaking. If you loved A Bride Most Begrudging by Deeanne Gist, you will enjoy this story.

The title is great and it's all downhill from there.  May 5, 2008
I was so looking forward to this book. Such a great plot! Such terrific potential. Sadly, potential is all this book has going for it.

So Drake is disinherited, revenge from his father from beyond the grave over something that was beyond poor Drakes control. So he devises a scheme to regain his inheritance through a bizarre plan to pretend to be his father, get married, produce an heir, then announce the death of a father. Somehting goes terribly wrong before the plan even begins to unfold (gee, I can't imagine something happening to mess up this brilliant idea!). He flees across the sea in disguise as an indentured servant.

Enter Serena the quaker, off to help the sick on the newly arrived ship. She sees Drake, sick beyond belief "Thou hast been wonderfully made" bamm, she's in LUST. He becomes the family servant and low and behold is also in LUST. The author spouts love but I don't think so. I didn't witness any falling. Just burning desire. They get caught alone in an embrace and decide to get married.

More happens, they travel back to England blah blah blah, I don't want to ruin the disappointment for you so I won't spoil the surprise.

Here is where the book goes wrong. First, I had learned that in this period the 1st born son could NOT be disinherited... I don't know how accurate that is but it came from a history class. Second, one of the justifications given by Serena in giving up her quaker lifestyle was that she never really felt that it was for her... however no indication was given of this fact. She seemed happy living this life. Next, the way a certain somebody (I don't want to spoil it so if you don't want a good hint avert your eyes) plans to continue with his wicked plan??? AND NOT GET CAUGHT????? He deserves whatever he has coming to him.

All in all, one of my least favorite books from this genre. Too bad because the premise sounds divine.
